Johnnie_esq,

Agree with all your points.  I was expecting someone to mention Title IX.  I am only comparing SJU to U$T football spending and pointing out that football supports more male programs than U$T.  .  I'm willing to bet the Tomcats are putting more $$'s into their football program.  I wouldn't be surprised if Caruso is taking home 2X what John is.  If not now, soon.  They'll have to do that to keep him, in my opinion.

Looks like we won't be getting Kim Kardashian up to the Stiftungsfestivities ever!! :'(
You say that as if it were a bad thing. ;)

Tom Stock says, "Our recruiting has suffered and we don't pour resources into football like other MIAC schools..."

Actually scoffed out loud when I read the above.  Come on now, you didn't really expect anybody to believe that.

I could believe the argument that SJU doesn't pour resources from outside the football program into the football program. There is a bunch of money in the SJU football program, but that all is a return from ticket sales and ad revenue for both radio and print.

Contrast that with someone like UST, who makes little money from ticket sales and advertising, pouring money into football. The university has paid (albeit an undisclosed amount) to WCCO to broadcast the games.

The debate shouldn't be who spends more, but rather where the money is coming from (and perhaps a debate as to how sustainable that is.)

They have to pay Caruso 2X more than Gags because Caruso has a house payment to make.  Doesn't Gags live in a house on campus?  Did he ever have to pay to live there or is the house provided to him by SJU?

For all he has done for that program I would be surprised if he had to pay anything.

I think John had to live on campus, because they didn't have cars when he started, right?  :)

I wonder if the recruiting statement is based on the fact that SJU doesn't spend money or significant time on those areas that ROR mentioned, albeit sarcastically. We had a small discussion about the Chicago area earlier. Any attempt on UST's part to garner kids from that area is probably more than SJU is currently doing.

He did, but he and Peggy also have a lake home near campus.  I believe that they gave up the campus home and moved to the lake permanently this year.

A tradition unrivaled...

Surprised nobody had posted this yet.

Johnnies on the Spot (StarTrib today)

Decent article and quite fair.  However, my concern is not with the topic of the article (we already know that!), but the comments from the staff.  If I have this straight and can paraphrase:

John says, "Our expectations are too high and this happens from time to time..."
Tom Stock says, "Our recruiting has suffered and we don't pour resources into football like other MIAC schools..."
Gary says, "We are young and the only team in the MIAC to replace a quarterback this fall..."
Jimmy isn't quoted.

Shouldn't we at least get the story straight, guys?

Don't pour resources into football?

That may be a leading contender for Common's Preposterous statement contest...

IALTO.

It'd be nice if private universities disclosed salaries like the public institutions...for the sake of this argument at least.

Also, the AARC may house the locker room, weight room, coaches offices, fancy elevated seating, concessions, but it is still a multipurpose facility...from the hoops, volleyball and swimming teams, to the average everyday student. It's not a "football only" place.

In reading the comments on the Star Trib, one SJU guy was pretty mad that Nordic Skiing got the shaft and that football was the only sport the ahtletic department cared about. Maybe Title IX should apply to nerds too.

I thought I remember something about the University wanting to tear that house down to put in some sort of community center or new student housing.

Out on beautiful Lake Watab. Word was, when they 1st bought it John reluctantly agreed, but only on the condition that he didn't have to do any of the lake chores and he could leave whenever he wants. The lake life must agree with him. Plus I'm sure all of his TV and video equipment has a happy new home at the new home.

Looks like a close race in the MIAC Pick 'ems...FOR 2ND PLACE! :D

Maybe lake life is making John soft and that's the reason for the down year.   ;) ??? :-\

I've got a couple Ole alums at work, one of which played football for one year.  In past years I've had to give him points or two to one odds on the Johnnie / Ole tilt.  I figure for this Saturday's tilt he should give me and the Johnnies 7 points.  Any thoughts?
