I hate winter more every year.

I feel your pain!  In regards for my disdain for winter, people continually ask me, "Haven't you lived here your whole life?"

Uh, yeah, but that doesn't mean that I have to like winter!!!

With the youngest being a senior in HS this year, my days of "toughing it out" regarding winter are going to be over.  The Mrs. & I are hoping to be able to do the north/south living arrangement 6 months/6 months.  We both work from home, so that is one obstacle overcome already.  Now I just need to figure out how to afford such an arrangement.   :-\

Congrats to the MIAC Football Athletes of the Week:

Offense: Jeffrey Dubose, Gustavus

QuoteThe Gustie running back had 344 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns to set new Gustavus single-game rushing, season rushing and season rushing touchdowns records.

Dubose carried the ball 32 times Saturday for a Gustavus record 264 yards, which also helped him surpass the school's record for rushing yards in a season. Dubose now has 1,261 yards, breaking the old record of 1,233. His four rushing scores pushed his season total to 21, bettering the old Gustie record of 17, and he also caught four passes for 80 yards in the win. Dubose ranks second in the MIAC in rushing yards (1,261) and rushing yards per game (140.1) and his 22 total touchdowns are seven more than the second-best number in the MIAC this season.

Defense: Mitch Heflin, Carleton

QuoteKnights' linebacker Mitch Heflin (Wayzata, Minn.) turned in an eye-catching defensive performance in defeat...

Heflin made 13 tackles Saturday - six solo and seven assists - with 3.0 tackles-for-a-loss against Gustavus. The Gusties managed just 23 yards on Heflin's 13 stops, and it was his third-straight game with double-digit tackles. His 13 tackles and three TFL led the MIAC Saturday, and his six solo stops ranked third. This season, Heflin's 59 total tackles rank 11th in the MIAC. he has 29 solo tackles and 30 assists to go along with 3.5 tackles-for-a-loss, and he averages 10.0 tackles per game in conference play.

Special Teams: Thomas Schleusener, Gustavus

QuoteThe Gustie junior continued his tremendous season with a perfect placekicking day and 10 points in a 34-19 win over Carleton Sunday, in addition to a 45.5 yards per punt average in the field-position game...

Schleusener was a perfect 4-for-4 on PATs and a perfect 2-for-2 on field goals Saturday to score 10 points in the kicking game in Gustavus' latest victory. His two field goals came from 22 and 33 yards out. He was also outstanding as a punter, with a total of 182 yards on four punts for his tremendous 45.5 average. He had a long of 57 yards, two inside the 20 and one touchback. Schleusener's 55 points leads all MIAC kickers, and he's 8-for-13 on field goals and 31-for-34 on PATs this season.

who uses this play first in the MIAC?   Caruso, Johnson or Rambler/Fasching?

Surprised the officials didn't blow the play dead.

Usually the coach will inform the refs ahead of time if they plan to use a trick play like that so the refs are ready for it and don't inadvertently blow the play dead.

After all of the comments regarding the live chats on the SCTimes, I read through this morning's with Fasching.  He deserves Sainthood for making it through those every week....some of the questions and comments...wow.   ???

Ridiculous, embarrassing.  What's wrong with people?

I have had some questions about the offense too, and have questioned some of the play calling, but do people really think there are better QB options on the bench?  Really?   Ramler's a bum?  Really?

The Johnnies are 7-2.  Seven and Two!!!   My God, the questions sound like they are bringing up the rear and have been pummeled all year.

One thing I've looked at, looked at the numbers, is that the RB's and TE's are not nearly as much a part of the passing game this year as in recent years.  Maybe it's a function of the talent, maybe John and Jimmy didn't hand over the index cards to Ramler and Gary.  Overman and Freetly at TE were very valuable receivers in past years, this year, hardly anything from TE.  Steve Johnson in particular recently, but also Reding and Schneider, and others, have been leading receivers.  Especially w/o a deep threat this year, seems like a more creative passing game would have helped.

But again, helped what??  Win 2 more games at most.

I'm guessing Bruns has played hurt most of the year (wearing the flak jacket, something can't be right), and has had a couple tough games, but for the most part has been okay.  Martin seemed to regress this year, but he's gonna help down the road, he's not done yet.

It's been a good year, solid year, they haven't beaten anyone to speak of other than the Tommies, but they've done better than the last couple years.  Keep the faith!!

Personally, I think St. John fans have become spoiled and if the team doesn't beat an opponent by 30 or more points then they are disappointed and are venting their frustrations.  They have improved from 5-5 last year to 7-3 (or 8-2 with a victory this weekend), which is an accomplishment but evidently not up to SJU standards in some people's mind.

I think you're right on the money.  However, I was more blown away by the idiotic nature of the questions / comments.  "Ramler doesn't know what he's doing!  The QB's all suck, isn't there anyone else on your 190 player roster?"  Even after those questions had been cycled through twice or more, they kept coming in...

Tremendous patience on Fasching's part to reply sincerely to all of the drivel that was coming in via the chat.

I was going to avoid Gary's chat but the Bethel guys' description drew me in.

Some favorites (and if any of these were left by posters here, my apologies. I'm sorry for your troubled souls and spotty spelling skills).

Comment From SJU fan
Gary - did you have the players wear pads in practice when you coached at your old high school? Do you think this would help SJU get tougher if they did this for the goal line plays on offense during the games?

Comment From Guest
After the first turnover in the Hamline game on the SJU player's poor decision to try and advance the punt deep in out oun end it looked like coach Ramler was the only coach that talked to him when he came to the sideline - isn't this your team? Do you talk to the players DURING the game or do all of your assistants make the decisions?

Can you please comment on why the Johnnies continue to pound their head into a brick wall using 2 QBs who have proven to be incapable of being playmakers? Can we get back to having a great offense to go along with that awesome defense - and the first step is QB play. Time to make a move there.

Comment From Gojohnnies
Coach - you're right when you say QB is the toughest position to play. So that being said, shouldn't you have the toughest guy possible playing that position then? They guys you've tried have failed.

Hi Gary, as an alum who played for John and yourself - great job on keeping the Johnnie magic alive. But Coach, the QB questions are fair, I hate to say. But the team is now shotgun/spread. That whole offense is predicated on having a QB capable of making throws and plays with his legs along with making great decisions... Your 2 guys have not gotten it done. And as an alum I am concerned that no change was made or at least attempted. It says a few things to us: 1) there's no one better on your roster - and that's scary. (2) refusal to make changes and (3) politics may be winning at SJU. What is your comment?

Comment From Tim Hunter
What did you see as Ramblers strengths. What was it about him you wanted on your staff? He was not successful as a coach. He had been fired. And no one had hired him. What was it you liked about Kurt that no other school saw?

Comment From Mankato SJU
Are either Gagliardis making play calls form the box. Or his John so offended that you demoted Jim that he refuses to help your cause? You would have won 2 more games with better play calling. It is so obvious to all in attendance.

Comment From JOHNNIE 84
When cornerbacks jump short routes our QB"S need to pump fake and the receivers should run wheel or deep routes. We need to make these kind of adjustments during the game.

Comment From Guest
This is not the NFL, Coach. You have almost 200 guys on your roster and I'm guessing about 10 QBs if it's the same as other years. It is seemingly unthinkable that no one else is deserving I an opportunity. In the NFL you play with what your MGMT gives you. At sju you make your own luck with recruiting and player development. And what you're saying by playing the same 2 guys who have failed over and over again is that your other players are undeserving and obviously very poor players?

I mean...

What do the kids say? Derp.

I'm just going to plagiarize myself and post what I did last week about the chats:
Quote
Honestly, I don't see what the upside is for Gary doing the chats, especially if they devolve into what they're apparently becoming. This week's one was especially eye-rolling. I respect him for doing it and it's admirable and of course some interesting insight. But again, I see no upside. Will it help recruiting? I can't see "our coach does live chats" winning out over 25 other reasons that go into picking a school. Does it give the fans insight into the program they might not have? Yeah. And so what? When it becomes a complaining fest filled with moronic questions and calling out individual guys who are surely reading it as well, I don't see the benefit. Or Gary having to answer questions about his staff. Keeping things in-house and all is harder to do when you have to finesse, which he does perfectly, those types of inquiries. Does Gary leave these things in a good mood? "Yeah, it was fun touching base with those passionate fans!"

Someone did actually ask him in this one if he'd continue to participate and Gary said he'd continue to and loves the passion. And he probably means it. Or, it's, "She has a great personality."

Gary has to be so self-deprecating on half the answers -- "that's on me, that's my responsibility" -- that it's like he's flogging himself throughout the chat (metaphorically, of course. I hope).

Where's the forum moderator?  These web chats usually have moderators that don't publish the repeat or offensive questions. Letting every question through is unusual and the opposite of smart.  If the SCTimes lets stupid questions get published in the chat then stupid people are attracted to a forum where they can revel in all their stupidness and have someone more important and time constrained justify their feeble, stupid existence by responding. With toddlers it's called a tantrum. With adults it's called an unmoderated web chat.

I wonder why SJU isn't demanding or offering a moderator for these things with Fasching.
