Quote from: Robert Zimmerman on August 08, 2025, 03:05:08 PMA little something from Gary about the QB situation:

https://wjon.com/ixp/70/p/quarterback-competition-st-johns-football/

He also mentioned a receiver transfer, Carson Hegerle, from NDSU. A quick google search revealed that he redshirted in 2022 ago and played in about five games in 2023. It then looks like he "retired" in August of 2024 due to do injury and health issues. It seems he busted up his ankle in the spring of 2024. Hopefully is recovered and able to contribute.

Sounds like he was quite an athlete in high school. Ran a 10.65 100 at 6'3".

U$T being eligible for the FCS playoffs has really captured the imagination of the Pioneer League Board with zero comments on subject.

Tommies open play at home on Aug.28 hosting Lindenwood. Wondering if U$T can avenge the 64-0 thrashing the Lions doled out last season.

Lindy's is being a bit lazy, I think.  The Tommies have done well in the Pioneer, for what that's worth, since they have been a member.

21: third
22: first
23: second
24: fifth

But their starting Jr QB transferred to SDSU this year so... they may be challenged as they need to get another.  Maybe Lindy's knows something after all.

EDIT: I imagine any talent in the Pioneer is raided pretty heavily.  The Tommies did very well with a D3 roster.  The Pioneer is obviously not a D1 talent destination.  Any talent that does end up there is gone pretty quickly, it would seem.  Must suck for the Tommies to be a recruiting minnow that has talent stolen by bigger programs and better financial packages, only to see that talent sit on the bench...

One of the new 8th grade coaches in our association is a recent Tommie.  Thankfully, Duff Jr. isn't on that team.  ;D

NIL has made that a reality across most of D1 now.  Smaller schools won't be able to keep anyone who has a big year, because they'll get spotted, and a major D1 will come calling with $$$.

I felt like that became pretty evident in the March Madness tourney this year for hoops...the small school's didn't have any ability to make a Cinderella run.

You mean the dude that transferred to SDSU last December/January and then transferred to Northern Arizona in May? https://x.com/taktateoka?lang=en

Seriously need to come up with a different word than "commitment." Maybe "my intention" is to play at (insert school), but "if I get a better offer I'm out."

It's also been a major detriment to high school kids getting recruited. Coaches spend as much time re-recruiting their own rosters and raiding other rosters that HS kids are simply far less a priority than they were a few years ago. Interesting to hear HS coaches talk about it. Kids just get less interest than they used to, and kids now actively go into signing day with an eye towards the next stop. Most D2 or FCS commits have clear strategy for how they'll make their way up the chain.

It's a shame that the strategy is almost always football-oriented and frequently ends with a half-assed degree and debt for whatever was outside the scholarship.  Even at SJU, which had resisted for years, we're seeing one-year (or less) transfers seeking football glory over scholastic pursuit.

The universities as the pathway to professional athletic success for football and basketball has definitely warped the student-athlete paradigm.  Sports that follow a club model to professional development seem to do a better job of separating the sport from the non-sport.

Just curious if anyone know of any D3 schools are paying athletes or have athletes getting money through NIL? I was asked today if I had any knowledge of a school paying an athlete(s) and I had no idea.
Thanks!

Bethel has the same exact setup...I assume they had to have "something" in place for compliance purposes.  I'm curious if any money is actually flowing through it.

I doubt it, but I have been wrong a time or two.
