I'm going to combine a couple of recent themes on the board and throw a speculative question out there.  With the change this season to mens/womens doubleheaders on Saturdays has come the disappearance of the Saturday mens JV games.  If you combine that with the earlier-referenced plunge in the economy and more players, perhaps of neccesity, taking low D1, D2, or NAIA scholarship offers, it seems like not only will it be more difficult to recruit the level of talent to the CCIW that we have become accustomed to, but also more difficult to develop  some of the other players who do come into the conference.  What do you think about how that might play out long term for the conference?  Is there a chance of the CCIW dropping back somewhat into the pack?  Does the WIAC, with it's ability to offer in-state tuition to out-of-state players pick up even more of an advantage?  Talk amongst yourselves.

I honestly don't think that the Saturday women's/men's doubleheaders are going to play into it. There's still ample opportunity for the eight CCIW programs to pick up plenty of JV games, particularly the Chicagoland Four -- jucos are thick on the ground around here, and lots of other local D3 and NAIA programs have junior varsities, too. Coaches might have to get a little creative -- say, scheduling Monday night or Thursday night JV games in January and February to make up for the lack of Saturday JV games, but I don't see it as a huge scheduling hardship.

Steve Djurickovic was named CCIW Player of the Week today. That makes three weeks in a row for Steve D., and it's the first time in at least the past eleven seasons that anyone's done that in this league.

While investigating that, I thought that for for the sake of discussion I'd post the list of all the CCIW players who've won Player of the Week at least four times over that eleven-season stretch:

When a man who spent a huge chunk of his adult life compiling sports minutiae for the CCIW accuses someone else who spent about fifteen minutes doing the same thing that he "needs a life," the phrase "pot calling the kettle black" leaps to mind. ;)

Yeah, Dennis, you're absolutely right. Nobody should ever do anything unless they're getting paid for it.

AndOne, I have no insider knowledge, but knowing Tony Ladd from my days at Wheaton I am not at all surprised that he would want the women to get the late game simply out of fairness. He has always been extremely pro-female athletics to the point where it sometimes irritated a few men's programs (not that they would openly admit).

That said, I don't think they pull this switch on a Saturday night with IWU in town.

... although they might move the game to a 4 pm tipoff in order to make the IWU fan contingent miss the early-bird specials at the local restaurants. ;)

I was comfortable with the explanation that Tony Ladd switched the games in order to reward the Wheaton women's team with the marquee time slot. I still think it was a bad decision, since it led to a mass exodus that must've felt like an insult to both schools' women's teams (the Crazies didn't stick around to watch their female peers play, either, so both the NPU and Wheaton women probably felt unhappy about the time switch as they watched everyone leave while they were in their shootarounds).  But I never really thought that Ladd did it in order to avoid a potential (perceived) problem with the Crazies.

Greg, the NPU bus that brought most of those students out to Wheaton was leaving right after the mens game.  Apparently it was an administrative decision  -  not a fan decision.  There were students that would have stayed but the bus was already warmed up and ready to go.

I'm glad to hear that the students are still using buses. My guess is that the NPU Student Association is the renter, as that's who used to acquire the buses for road games in the past. Of course, students with wheels will still pile four or five buddies into their cars, but it always seems as though the student road attendance is higher when there's a bus available and nobody has to scramble for a ride.

Naturally, it never seems to occur to anybody that for the price of a pizza he or she could take public transportation to any of the other three CCIW gyms in Chicagoland and back. Then again, this is not a particularly opportune time for me to be extolling the virtues of the Regional Transportation Authority. ;)

Hardwood

2nd Regional rankings are out:

1.  Wash U
2.  Carthage
3.  IWU
4.  Anderson
5.  St. Norbert
6.  Wheaton
7.  Augustana
8. Defiance

How does Carthage get beat at home and move up 2 spots?

Hardwood

Check that -- How does Carthage lose and remain in the 2 spot?

Pat Coleman

Just because they lost doesn't mean they have to automatically move down. They could have been considered to have a healthy lead on the rest of the rankings last week.

Wheaton trailing 49-40 in Rock Island goes on a 16-4 run and wins at Augie 56-53. Huge win for the Thunder who now own a series sweep over the vikes.

Not for any school-sponsored program offered to non-athletes as well (such as academics).  Some schools have certain reciprocity agreements (for example, anyone can go to UW Superior and pay in-state tuition and I think Wisconsin and Minnesota have general reciprocity).  I've heard (though I haven't verified) that Platteville offers reciprocity to students from Illinois, but that's just a rumor.

I'm guessing that Titan Q will have the full game recap from the home state of the Super Bowl Champions.  In the mean time, the Titans won 75 - 66 down in Decatur.  I believe the lead was as big as 20 in the second half.

Mr. Ypsi

I think Wheaton just finished off the (faint) hopes of Augie for a pool C.  Since Wheaton and Augie are now each 14-7 (in region), they are both clinically dead for a C.  (IF Augie had run the table right up to the conference tourney final, with their SOS they would have risen to bubble territory.)

Carthage is now 13-3 and IWU is now 17-4 (both in region).  Even with ONE more (pre-tourney) loss, they are probably reasonably safe for a C.  Two more for either and it gets very dicey.  I'd project that the CCIW is a two bid conference, UNLESS someone other than Carthage or IWU takes the AQ.  We'd fall to one bid IF IWU or Carthage goes into the tank and the one who doesn't takes the AQ.
