Actually, he was an assistant for the Bluejays last year...and I did mention it.  ;) :P

Dansand- You beat me to the punch. Nate Swetella's week back in 05-06 was the first thing I thought of when Greg made that post. His game winning put back at the buzzer though was an absolute dagger. I can still picture that exact play in my mind. He was the only one on the right side of the basket and caught the brick and laid it in uncontested. Still hurts.

Your post made me go back and check who threw up the "brick." It was (Elmhurst assistant coach) Rick Harrigan. :D  He didn't have too many that year (CCIW Player of the Year).

I guess, looking at the play-by-play, Nate's put-back wasn't at the buzzer, but with about four seconds left. Drew Wessels added a couple free throws to make the final 63-60.

I apologize for being unclear. Harrigan is apparently the new primary assistant coach at Elmhurst, i.e., the full-timer who also serves as recruiting coordinator and as Mark Scherer's right-hand man. Jason Hawkins, who succeeded John Baines in that role last July, is no longer there.

In sifting through the Internet this morning, however, I found a listing for that job that was posted in May -- so perhaps Harrigan isn't taking it after all, but instead remains a part-time adjunct to the coaching staff. The reason why I thought that Harrigan had acceded to the primary assistant coach position was because the position isn't listed on d3jobs.com.

Augie's released its 2011-12 schedule:

I like that match-up on December 10th...!

That looks to be a pretty darn (and tough) schedule.

Congratulations to NPU graduate assistant Steve Schweer, who has just been hired as the assistant coach at Monmouth.

Did news of former Elmhurst All-American Chris Martin ('06) joining the EC staff make it here yet?

I apologize if it has already.

That's new info, Bob -- and it would seem to indicate that Rick Harrigan will remain a part-time adjunct on the Elmhurst coaching staff, since Kevin Juday's press release specifically states that Chris Martin is replacing the departed Jason Hawkins.

If nothing else, Elmhurst's coaching staff could now probably beat any other D3 coaching staff in the nation in a game of 2-on-2 or 3-on-3.

I received an e-mail with information on Elmhurst's recruiting class...

* John Avery, 6-6 F (Newark H.S.)

* Will Botefuhr, 6-8/250 (Prospect H.S.)

* Michael Ellis (St. Edwards H.S., Elgin)

* Brandon Grubl, 6-3 G (Morgan Township H.S., Valparaiso, IN) - 22 ppg, 7 rpg, 4 apg

* Michael Jerkovich (Reavis H.S.)

* Jerome Robinson, 6-6 F (Lewis U./Morton College/St. Patrick H.S.) - 12.9 ppg at Morton College (NJCAA 2nd Team All-American as soph at Morton)

The person who e-mailed me thinks Grubl will be a "good to great" CCIW player.

I have noticed a previously unknown (to me) Elmhurst player doing some nice work this summer. After asking about his identity, I have been advised its 6'6'' newcomer Jerome Robinson. Strong, and built like a football player. He resembles IWU soph to be Victor Davis.

From TQ's post it appears Robinson spent a year at Lewis and 2 at Morton JC.

I look for EC to make a definite improvement this season. I don't believe they're ready for an upper half conference finish, but I do look for a better record, and for them to force teams to have to work harder to beat them. Rather than blowouts, I sense several of their losses will be close games.

If the EC season began today I'd look for a starting lineup of D'Ante Foster, James Robertson, Zack Boyd, Nick Sanford, and either Steve Crane or Erik Dornfeld.

Coach Scherer has been attending most summer league games and has the Bluejays running several of their regular offensive sets.

Don't know how many of you are following this story, but Giovanine's name has come up in the article on CNNSI:

SI.com has identified Few and former Rice, Wichita State and Cornell basketball coach Scott Thompson (investment most recently valued at $65,000) as the latest names to be added to an initial list of nine basketball coaches first reported by CBSSports.com. Those nine included: Gillispie; Olson; Drew; Nebraska coach Doc Sadler ($38,000); Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (and former Rice) coach Willis Wilson ($642,000); Gonzaga assistant (and former Utah head coach) Ray Giacoletti ($1.2 million); United States Merchant Marine Academy (and former Nebraska) coach Danny Nee ($23,000); Augustana College coach Grey Giovanine ($533,000); and former Houston and Nevada coach Pat Foster. Save for Foster, SI.com was able to independently confirm each of those individuals as clients of Salinas.

I'll add whatever information I can when I get it. As of right now, however, all I know is that Malcom Kelly has played for NPU's summer-league team for whatever reason -- and, as far as that goes, the explanation for his playing for NPU in Deerfield could be something as simple and as harmless as the Vikings needing an extra player on a particular night when they were short-handed.

Rumors can be dangerous things. I would advise us all to proceed cautiously with this one. In my estimation, Malcom Kelly is a Carthage Red Man until compelling evidence indicates otherwise.

As an update to the scenario concerning Carthage' s(?) Malcom Kelly which has previously been discussed here, sight seen tonight at the Deerfield summer league---

Observed BOTH Carthage summer league teams playing earlier tonight. In a league where Malcom Kelly, for whatever reason, has been observed playing for North Park, he played on NEITHER of the 2 Carthage teams this evening.
Of course there are a multitude of reasons he could have been absent from either CC team tonight---transportation problems, work, injury, illness.

As Mr Sager reminded us, rumors can be dangerous things, and Malcom Kelly remains a Carthage Red Man until compelling evidence indicates otherwise.
However---there is no doubt that actions have occurred, and thus evidence has been submitted, that have already moved the situation beyond mere rumor and into the realm of a definite possibility. Additionally, while the threshold of evidence "beyond all reasonable doubt" has not yet been crossed, "compelling" evidence that Mr. Kelly might no longer remain a Carthage Red Man appears be mounting. Could Kedzie & Foster be his next stop?

I cynically thought AAU teams filled with secondary students were created for the purpose of steering them to schools and also for the owner's personal financial enrichment.  Remember SI's expose of the recruiting of a young Tyson Chandler?  Locally, why does a Whitney Young HS security guard, who is also the school's head boys basketball caoch, operate Ferrari?  Perhaps the owner of Illinois AAU Old School is a trust-fund baby and runs the program because he loves the sport of basketball.  No day job is listed, unlike others on the website.  I guess I have no idea.

BTW:  Former Redman Brett Nishibayashi is an Old School coach.

Kyle Nelson is playing with the Augie team in the Deerfield summer league. Don't know if I've seen a senior whose class has graduated, still playing with his "old" school team. Anyone know if he still has some eligibility remaining?

markerickson

Is this how the gradation should be?

1.  Rumor.
2.  Beyond a reasonable doubt.
3.  Preponderance of the evidence.
4.  Clear and convincing evidence.
5.  Factually correct.

He's used up his four years of eligibility.
