UW-La Crosse 80
North Park 67

William Bates: 19 pts (8-12 FG)
Kolden Vanlandingham: 13 pts, 11 rebs, 7:2 a:to, 3 stls
Mike Vuckovic: 6:2 a:to

The Vikings were hanging around with the preseason #7 Eagles well into the second half, but then UWL, which had been ice-cold from downtown, got hot and gained separation -- while the Vikings, who haven't shot the trey well in any of their three initial contests, continued bricking them and couldn't get the UWL lead back down to single digits late.

UWL is every bit as good as their preseason ranking (and wins in Virginia over likewise-preseason-ranked Hampden-Sydney and Virginia Wesleyan) would indicate. JJ Paider is a 6'8", 230 beast who is averaging over 28 ppg and 8 rpg now, and Dustin Derousseau and Sam Grieger and big, highly skilled guards who can dominate at both ends of the floor; Grieger in particular really erased Mike Vuckovic's offensive game today and turned him into a mere facilitator.

This was a healthy smack in the mouth for the Vikings, who will gain much more from trying to hang with a team like UW-La Crosse than they did in beating teams like Lake Forest and Alma.

IWU over UW Oshkosh, playing much better tonight, winning the championship game of the Sikma Hall of Fame Invitational at the Shirk, 75-68.

For UMO:
Beck 17
Kangas 12
Thomas 10

For IWU:
Funk 16
Cleveland 16 and 14
Fridman 15

Titans shooting 44% from the field, but only 17% from three.  This is not a strong shooting team. The difference a 40-20 advantage in points in the paint.

Funk named to All-tournament team, and Cleveland name MVP of the tournament.  Well deserved in both cases.  Fridman is amazing.  And, Lawrence played better tonight, especially on the defensive end.

Titans open 2-0.

Glad to see the Titans playing in the 70s tonight, with a much better range of offensive contributors.

A work in progress . . .

Like Greg said, UWL got hot from downtown in the last quarter of the game whereas NP failed.  Oddly, the Vikings seemed hesitant, especially the V Brothers after each made his first attempt.  The undersized Vikings repeatedly penetrated the paint, ending with a blocked shot.

NP kept this game interesting until the last nine minutes or so.

Augustana defeated Hamline, 62-59, up in St. Paul on a Ray Maurchie free throw with with 31 seconds left, a missed jumper by the Pipers, and then a foul and two more Maurchie free throws with seven seconds remaining. They were the only three points Maurchie scored in the game. Jake Willems paced the Rock Islanders with 18 and 9, while Marieon Anderson and Andre Klaver had 11 apiece, Cam Atkinson scored 10, and Maurchie grabbed seven rebounds.

Transfer-laden North Park appeared to lack continuity whereas UWL returns three starters from last year's EE team, including the best player on the court. Grieger shined last night.

Congrats to Mike Vuckovic upon being named CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week.

And, again, kudos to Mike for finding ways to help his team on Saturday afternoon, even as the UWL defense forced him to give up the ball. Six assists and six rebounds for a PG against a top ten team is nothing to sniff at, especially since he only committed two turnovers. Through NPU's first three games Vuckovic is averaging 23.7 ppg (with a .519 FG%), 7.0 rpg, and 4.7 apg (with a 2:1 ratio), plus he's on better than a steal-per-game pace.

Thanks! Had to put on the hoodie over my polo because it was freezing in the crackerbox, despite the fact that it was 65 degrees outside on Saturday.

I spent the entire game resisting my urge to comment on that ridiculous hair-dye job sported by UWL's #3.

Two pretty interesting games involving CCIW teams scheduled for tonight, and I have the evening free, so I'll probably be flipping back and forth between Illinois College @ Millikin and Benedictine @ Wheaton.

Millikin got some separation from what had been a close game at the half, powering to a 75-66 win over Illinois College at the Griz in a game that the Big Blue led by double digits for the last six minutes until IC hit a meaningless FT with 16 ticks left. Monster game for 5'10" Ian Winkler, who played much bigger than his size with a 23 and 7 effort, while Lane Thomann added 18 and 7, Nate Straughter tossed in 16, and Chris Ketchum had 11.

Despite trailing throughout the entire first half, often by double digits, Wheaton blew the doors off of  a Benedictine team that cooled down considerably in the second half (and took terrible care of the ball throughout the game) in the latter stanza in King, outscoring the Bennies 55-32 en route to a 95-80 win. Big 28 and 8 night for Kyan Vanderwoude, while Soren Richardson and Carson Grier each scored 15 (and had four and three steals, respectively) and Kyle Neibch and Reid Olson put in a dozen points apiece, almost all of them from beyond the arc.
