Hope 92 Olivet 64

This game had a chance for some drama when Michael McClary picked up foul #2 at 18:07, felt bad for him a little because there was nothing he could do.  Followed by Jesse Reimink picking up his 2nd foul at 14:20, both were pretty much crap calls.

Maybe the worst officiated game all year....two of the 3 officials were out of their league....McClary didnt deserve either of his first 2 fouls.

Well, the youngster(looked like he was young enough to throw a jersey on and play in the JV game) officiated the JV game prior to doing the Varsity and was the subject of ridicule there as well for his poor job. I don't think it is common practice to let an referee officiate back to back games.

Puzzled by this seemingly bizarre reffing situation, I went to a very reliable source to verify.  Turns out this was not the same individual reffing both the JV and Varsity contests.  I don't have the names in front of me, but I have been assured that there was no doubling up of duties.  They must have just looked very similar (and evidently performed similarly).   :)

I am very interested to see how the bottom of the league finishes up this year.  Right now, the MIAA Tourney First Round would pair Calvin and Trine.  Trine has played Calvin tough twice this year and I don't think the Knights want to see them again.  I have seen Trine, Alma, and Kzoo at Van Noord this year and IMO Trine is the most balanced team of the bunch.  At this point, I would much rather see the Scots or Hornets come into Van Noord on Feb 25 than the Thunder.  Trine has Alma and Kzoo at home still to come.  In fact, Trine has 4 of the remaining 6 games in Angola.

On the whole season Bunn is 49-54, 90.7%.........he's chasing the Hope single season record.  They don't keep a consecutive made stat, but 27 is probably up there.

I happened to talk to Peter after the game Saturday.  (I had to applogive for yeling during his missed free throw - *explanation below).  He told me that 4 of his 5 misses this year have been on technical foul shots.  Maybe the lack of other players around has some negative effect.  Regardless, I hope his hot FT shooting continues.

*Why I was yelling during his 2nd Technical foul shot:  During the foul shots, the Olivet team was moving around and talking with their coach, which was on the same side of the court as Peter was shooting the foul shots.  I have always understood the rule to be that during technical foul shots, all players from both teams are required to be across the half court line from the shooter.

It is a bit early to be concerned about the MIAA tourney, but since the subject came up of #8 beating 1 or 7 beating 2 I went back over the tournament pairings since 92.  Some years # 1 had the bye, only so 3 first round games were played.
The higher ranked home team has only lost 5 times in the first round of games.
By my calculation the number 6 seed has beaten the # 3 seed on more ocassions, than # 5 seed has beaten the # 4 seed.
It is possible a # 7 seed could beat the number 2, or even a #8 take out a #1, but the odds of it happeneing are very long.

What is it about Van Noord Arena?

At home Calvin is a combined 100-257 for a FG% of 0.389.  On the road, the Knights are 107-219 for a FG% of 0.489.  That's a full 0.100 higher than at home!  In all four road games Calvin has shot better than their best home game.  Calvin's home opponents have been Alma, Kzoo, Trine, and Olivet (#4,5,6,7 in FG% Defense).

Calvin's FG% defense is 0.363 at VNA and 0.422 on the road so at least the opponets have been following with low FG%.

The MIAA's 8 poll drought in the D3hoops.com top 25 poll has come to an end.  Hope received 2 poll points in the lastest poll.

That is the week 2 poll.  No MIAA votes in the poll from games through 1/25.

Here's the current bottom 4's remaining schedule.

Alma 3-5          calvin, @trine, @adrian, hope, olivet, @albion
Adrian  3-5      @kzoo, @calvin, alma, trine, @hope, @olivet
Kzoo 2-6         adrian, @hope, @olivet, albion, @trine, calvin
Trine 1-7         @olivet, alma, albion, @adrian, kzoo, hope

Alma and Kzoo seem to have the toughest road, with all 4 of the first 4 placed teams remaining.  I don't think I'd make Alma a favorite in any of their remaining games.  Kzoo needs to win Saturday.

3 wins might end up being the basement this year, I think Trine has the chance to win at least 3 more games.

Worst case scenario for the #2 or #3 seed is Olivet going into a funk and finishing 6th or 7th.  That would be a tough matchup.

What is the 3FG made/game requirement to be ranked?  Matt Veltema (.471) and Cory Schneider (.465) both have been shooting at a higher clip thatn Wes Weir (.454) and both make over 2 per game.

;D congrats, ypsi, for getting the first post on a landmark page--1300. Do we love the MIAA or what??!!

Since my previous post (and GoVols) were still on p.1299, I gotta try to make him a prophet! ;)

Dang!

But this one should do it. ;)

It must be too cold. Shrinkage

I think Pat must be toying with us - that last post of mine came up on p. 1300; now it's 1299! ???

It wasn't me. I'm not the only one with the power to delete posts. In fact, I delete fairly few posts these days -- probably no more than one a week on average.
