WOTS is 800+ Calvin students attended a Midnight Madness event last night. There is, apparently, a big push to get students in the seats at games -- Van Noord could use a change in student participation culture.

Did they hand out the Cheer Sheets too???!!   :)    :D     :)     :D

Ahhhhhh.... even with the Smilicons, the Karma Fairies are Alive and Well!!!  :)   Guess the truth is too hard to handle for some folks!  :)  :)   :)

In all honesty, that was lame.  But that was one goofball former staff member by the initials of "NZ" that thought that would be cool just that one time. The Cameron Crazies do it but they are kind of lame  8-) Unfortunately Knight Nation doesn't have a website to go to and memorize with all their cheers and traditions like the Dew Crew does.  ;)

I believe the Maize Rage produces a "cheer sheet" including game-specific information. I'm sure it is actually quite common.

Sounds like a promising development, the only problem is we've heard this before.  Look at the multiple mascots used, with lackluster results, over the last 10 years to try to drum up more support.  I truly hope that this is the start of something real and tangible because it is quite evident that Hope's student support has out paced Calvin's for quite some time.  The real test will come during the doldrums of winter when there is a week night game against an Alma or Kzoo and we see what kind of attendance and participation there is from the student section.

At least the pre-season can hold optimism for a change.

I checked the schedule and getting a lot of Calvin students to a weeknight game against Alma or Kalamazoo will be a problem. The fact that both of those games are on the road makes Calvin student participation problematic. The Knights do play five weeknight home games this season: Anderson (the Tuesday of Thanksgiving week), Adrian (the Thursday after New Years), and then Wednesday games against Hope, Albion and Trine.

:P  I apologize for not schedule checking, that will be hard to draw students to those games LOL.  Was just trying to make a general point that a game mid week in the middle of winter against an unexciting and expected inferior opponent will be the true test of any type of culture shift among student section fans.  Though you bring up another good point.  The Dew Crew seems to travel to away games a bit better than Calvin's student section also.

Calvin students have turned out in great numbers for at least a few volleyball matches, and they did a great job!  It was loud, it was coordinated, and it was enthusiastic.  Most notably, Tom Snikkers seemed to be one of the ringleaders, and he did very well.  He was also very good about redirecting students when the cheering got nasty (as it can with any wound up student fan base).  I was very impressed with them, and with him in particular.  If they can keep up that momentum into basketball season, the Hope at Calvin game will be intense!

Certainly not, but it does make it harder to credibly direct criticism towards any such group in particular.

Couple exhibitions tonight to finish off the actual pre-season before it starts for real next Friday.

Albion at Oakland  7:30pm

links found here:  http://www.ougrizzlies.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/oakl-m-baskbl-sched.html

OT:  Calvin's mens' soccer team bows out of the national tournament in the first round 3-0 to DePauw.  Only time all year Calvin was shut out.  DePauw scored 31 seconds into the match and despite 29 shots, Calvin never recovered.

DePauw  >:(  Hope opened the season there with a 3-2 2OT loss, and Calvin ends the season against them.

Calvin was shutout only once all year in its season finale. The only time Olivet was shutout all year was last Saturday in the MIAA Championship game, and that score was also 3-0. The top two MIAA teams in men's soccer this season had something in common!

I went to tonight's game between #1 Calvin and # 2 Wittenberg and you're right. The student section was phenomenal--easily the best student participation I've seen at a Calvin sporting event since the 2000 basketball season. I understand they actually have been practicing and it showed. Their volume and enthusiasm clearly had an effect on the match won by the Knights in five close and exciting sets. Now Calvin heads to DeVos for the quarterfinal round, and hopefully more. Now, if can only get that student crowd to show up at basketball games. Unfortunately, if the women advance to the semifinal round the Calvin Tip-Off Tournament will take a hit because a Friday evening volleyball game will conflict with Calvin hoops.
