In Calvin's win tonight, one of the greatest changes from recent years was that the team did a much better job of defending the outside shot.  Instead of two quick passes around the outside providing an easy three pointer for the competition, the defenders did a much better job of defending the entire half court.  They did sag to the middle to help from the weak side, but they made sure they could get back to contest almost every shot.  Surprisingly, a large percentage of Grace's point came on quick passes to the inside that caught defenders slightly out of position to prevent the layup.  Those did not seem to result from a lack of help so much as proper positioning by the defense.

Capital 83 Alma 73

I don't think Cap was ever able to get much more than 15 ahead.  Capital's two big scorer's Niekamp and Sommer ate up the the Scots with 20 and 36.

Isiah Law had 21 for Alma

Wow.  My favorite stat is Faith's 0 assists to 37 turnovers.  Holy crap.

Quick math says that's not a good ratio.

My favorite stat was points in the paint.  72-2

My favorite stat... Hope was 7/8 on dunks this afternoon.

North Central 73 Illinois Tech 20

The two best defensive teams in the country square off tomorrow night in Naperville.  ::) ;)

I suspect they may have to hire actors to portray an audience for IL Tech vs. Faith - the average church league game will probably have more skilled players! ;)

H'berg is picked for 8th in the OAC, not such a good start for Trine.  Ian Jackson w/33

Yikes. Not a strong result for the Thunder at all.

So the MIAA sits at 4-3 overall and 2-2 vs D3 (all in region).

My favorite stat... Hope was 7/8 on dunks this afternoon.

Thing is that the one missed dunk was easily the most impressive.  Alex Eidson (6-2 guard) drove the baseline and was dunking over a 6-5 defender who fouled him - thus the miss. All of the others were breakaways.

Not much else to say about yesterday other than to point out it was a very strange thing to watch. Kudos to both teams for how they handled the situation. CoF players never gave in and also never got chippy or frustrated. Hope players showed respect and despite the score there was no running up the score or showing up the other team.

Not up to Nate Silver standards, you say HopeConvert?

What can we say?
*Two evenly matched halves?
*If this game counts, Hope will lead DIII in per game scoring margin for some time to come?
*Too bad Nate ruined his perfect night with the missed free throw . . . but he can hope the game counts toward his season percentages.
*And isn't this a bit sad for the new team, and a little embarrassing for North Central (albeit appreciating that they apparently had a team drop out)?
*Can one fault the Hope players, with starters all playing less than 20 minutes, for playing on?  (I think not.)
*It's gym practice before the real game tomorrow night?

Bold for emphasis up above.

A 118-20 game is certainly an unusual season opener (Hope had 22 by the time I could pull up the live stats) but from all that I've been able to gather the only one that should be embarrassed about what happened is North Central. It seems that attracting teams to these four-team events is becoming increasingly difficult - let's hope some die out before we start seeing more matchups like Hope vs. College of Faith.

I thought if you we're fouled in the act of shooting it was not considered a FGA.  Is that incorrect?

It is not an FGA, you are correct.

A Grace Bible player air balled a dunk attempt in Friday's game. Hadn't yet seen that play before.

You can only say that because you're too young to have seen oldknight play.

Very quiet on here to start the season.

Calvin looking strong through the first half.

NPU's getting killed on the boards, as I expected: 24-13.

Take away the star 6'8 center and his 6'7 backup from a team that's already's on the small side and put them on the bench in street clothes with knee injuries, and this is what happens. NPU is really going to struggle against big teams like Calvin, for now at least.

Looks like Calvin played very good D over the last five minutes, but I wonder how much of that was NPU breaking down offensively due to frustration.
