Other states seem to make this work. I'm sure Michigan can figure it out.

Pat: I realize this is the offseason and we have extra time on their hands right now but believe me, you don't want MIAA posters debating this issue on your board. ::)
No kidding - in fact I propose that we institute the DER (Dead Equine Rule) on the subject right now.

Interestingly enough in Illinois the IHSA (MHSAA equivalent) has been taking a beating in the press for expanding the high school basketball set up from 2 classes to 4. All of this further supports my belief that anyone in governing-body sports administration, ie NCAA admin. or state high school equivalents (not referring to college ADs), are some of the most misguided  individuals who are totally unwilling to consider the often harmful or self-centered their decisions they make.

It was written in the SLIAC room that Steve Hettinga, formerly the coach at Olivet and also for a GR semipro team, and last year the head coach at Mac Murray in the SLIAC, has left MacMurray for a coaching job in Michigan.

Anyone heard where he's going?

He generated a real turn around at Mac in his only season - went from 9-16 to 16-9 and 14-4 in the conference, good for a tie for first.  It's a small town school, but I thought he had it going pretty well - I'm surprised at the move...

Not really the point.

I actually have no opinion on this as I can see the arguments from both sides have merit.   I have no children of HS age or near HS age, I don't attend many HS games.   Its just a decision that has been in the wings for a couple of years and the decision came today, and it will affect our sports seasons and coverage greatly.  Its greatest impact will come during March madness, hence my zoo comment, but its indeed a season long issue.

Thought maybe a couple people might have something interesting to say about it, thats all.

I hardly think it was negative karma worthy, thats the kind of petty thing that drives people away from this discussion board.

Explains why I saw him at the Class A semi-final games then. :D

Thanks for the answer on the Puls family.  I sort of assumed they were family, but prefer to have the info confirmed.   :)

Conferences like the OK probably long ago figured out how they would handle the scheduling issue.   Might be a bit harder for the non-conference games.

Seven years ago my old high school built a second gym. The reasoning was so the wrestling team (always top notch) didn't have to practice in the cafeteria anymore among others (like being old and small).

So now, its back to the cafeteria for the wrestlers. :D

....and now my old high school is way ahead of the curve when it comes to facilities for basketball, at least in terms of number of gymnasiums.  ;D

From what I've read the scheduling is fairly simple, with the boys and girls playing the same teams in opposite locations.  Some conferences are also considering Wed's and Saturday games.

The biggest issues other states that made the same change had seemed to be availability of officials, and conducting the state tournament.  Along with losing coaches who had dual head coaching roles.  Take Unity Christian for example who won 2 confernces, 2 districts, 2 regionals, a quarter final and state championship with the same coach.  One of those 2 teams is losing a top notch coach.

The MHSAA has already said the girl's finals will be a week before the boy's finals at EMU and MSU respectively.  Which means you'll have girls regionals going on at the time of boy's districts, which will lesson the impact that playing both districts the same week would have had and hopefully reduce or eliminate the chance your HS would have a boy's and girls game on the same night.

That's similar to how the IHSA does it here in Illinois -- basketball follows a four-week staggered schedule. First, the Class A girls start their season; then a week later the Class AA girls start their season; the next week the Class A boys get things underway; and then a week later the Class AA boys play their first games. So, for example, this season concluded with the Class A girls Final Four being held February 22-24 in Normal; the Class AA girls Final Four being held March 1-3 in Normal; the Class A boys Final Four being held March 8-10 in Peoria; and then the Class AA boys Final Four wrapping it all up March 15-17 in Peoria.

Of course, next year the IHSA moves from a two-class format to a four-class format for basketball (an idea which has met with widespread disapproval among fans from all across the Prairie State, but ... oh, well), so the schedules will be different. But I'm still reasonably sure that the girls in each of the four classes will start their seasons at least a week, if not two, before their male schoolmates start theirs.

I'm guessing Lake Superior State.

Almac  -  that's correct  - I believe it was Sac who came over to the SLIAC room and let us know about Coach Hettinga going to LSSU.

Being very familiar with both the SLIAC and Michigan hoops, this move is tough to understand, unless it is the "move up to D2" reason.   Lake Superior is so isolated from all but Northern and MTU, and the weather- for no one but the hardy.  Hettinga had a very good squad returning at MacMurray, one that would have challenged for the conference crown, but there were two obvious negatives - the SLIAC is clearly down low on the D3 food chain, though seemingly moving at a slow crawl upwards, AND, MacMurray as an institution seems to be having problems (no SID all year, leading to limited pubilc communications regarding their teams, a campus that is basicly locked up on weekends - I went to a Saturday afternoon game with some paperwork and could not get into the student union, the library, or a large classroom building, all locked, and a smattering of fan support consisting of player families and several members of the football team.  Not very impressive to a visiting recruit.....  Still though, one more year would have generated another season pushing 20 wins, which could have led to a more attractive alternative than north of Canada Lake Superior....

Hey, don't be so critical. Eddie Douma turned his gig at LSSU into a D-I head coaching position at Kent State.

That wasn't me, I just elaborated on a post.  In fact I've been unable to find anything official that Hettinga is the new coach at LSSU.  The only source so far thats said as much has been d3hoops.com.
