Fun Fact, UR has beaten WW six times in a row now dating back to 2009..forgot about the Selway days...

UR wins by 17, despite spotting WW a touchdown with a fumble.

Week 1 to Week 2, what did I see....Improvement, which is really nice to see, props to coaches and players

Special teams, we cleaned it up....Our punts were clean, good snaps, blocked well etc, our FG group got on the same page, holder has learned how to ask for the ball, blocked it better and the kicker calmed down. Good job

Offense, SCIAC DC's have to be bummed, instead of breaking out the same play cards for the last five years with four sets on them, three patterns, and four running plays...They have to update their UR play list...A lot more work for DCs. I saw nine different base formations, could have been more..Let alone variations off these sets the SCIAC has not seen. I really liked the play calling, the fact is it did not force the qb to do more than he is capable of doing. He did a good job of playing within himself. We have some nice RBs and the OL blocked fairly well. I saw some backers getting blocked and some pulling linemen get to someone. Let hope UR players have bought in and at this point refine what they do. It was nice to see the defense get off the field, we all saw what happens when its not backed up all game.

The defense was solid, this d line we have is big and about as good as I have see in the last 5 years. UR runs a 3-5-3, our inverts are brand new and learning, clearly WW game plan was to attack them. They held up and will get better as the season goes on. Prop to the DC and players giving up 10 points, and a 200 yards game net, we win 95% of the time. WW had no running game with just 6 in the box at times. Tough to win if you are WW and six man box is controlling the run. Young QB struggle with UR d line on his tail all day.

It was one game, lets see if they can duplicate it, if so we all might have under estimated them.

Thanks for the report! Bulldog D has been anywhere from solid to spectacular for the better part of the last 20 years. If the offense can start to pull its weight the Dogs will be back to playing for championships year in and year out. Glad to hear the new OC is off to a good start.

6 straight vs WW is impressive. I know the Pirates had a few down years in there but the 2007 win in the Pine Bowl that started the streak is one of Redlands best wins. That WW team was really good and that win propelled Redlands back into relevance for a long time after a few bad seasons. Maybe this one will do the same!

Don't get me wrong, that was a very good win for Redlands but it's not like they beat a playoff level Whitworth squad. I think the current Whitworth QB will be replaced at some point this season.

CMS pulled a rabbit out of their hat but give some thanks to GFU's coaching staff for being complete dunderheads in running a sweep with 1:20 left on 2nd & 8 with the CMS only having 1 timeout left.  That is malpractice.

Wildcat,

I agree, my post was more about UR ...not calling for a Top 25 status, we were picked 4th in league, maybe that was off a bit. Plus what we saw is what we have been asking for offensively.

wildcat11

No worries, was responding more to 31's post and not yours.  Good to see the Dawgs offense get more diverse and balanced.  West Coast D3 is better when Redlands is good.

Cat,

I was following the stats and saw the highlight of the long TD. Did you see the whole final sequence? Did Fox have to run plays or could they have kneeled it out?

31,

2nd and 8, on the 11, with 1:20 left and CMS with 1 timeout.  Only one way to do it from that far out, IMO.  You kneel.  If you kneel, CMS calls timeout, kneel again and run the clock down between 30-35 second to kick the short field goal to go up by 4 and put it on your defense to close the game out.  That would have been my call because the GFU DE, Eriksen had 5 sacks at that point and was getting pressure at will.

But the GFU staff decided to try to finish the game by getting the 1st down or the TD. If you're going to run then power it up the gut, downhill, between the tackles.  Everyone and their mom knows you're not throwing the ball and the field is compacted at that point so you're just asking for trouble in running to the edges and that trouble happened because it was a dumb play to run in that situation.

Should be a great year for the SCIAC. It will be interesting who comes out the Surf and Sun as winners to play in the championship game. My predictions are below.

Sun 1 vs. Surf 1 - Redlands(#1 seed) vs Chapman

Sun 2 vs. Surf 2 - CMS vs PP

Sun 3 vs. Surf 3 - CLU vs La Verne

1. Chapman
2. Redlands
3. CMS
4. PP
5. Cal Lu
6. La Verne

olddog

So Cal

I see things in a similar way, except CMS ...could be the ya butt...and take it...after this weekend we will know alot, PP might be down more than I thought. UR improvement week to week is key, the new system is weeks old... three weeks of spring and 5 plus of camps.

Going to be a fun weekend, playing the Regals is always a big game for UR.

I was at Pomona vs CMS. The rain was pretty bad for much of the game. Neither team is as good as they have been for the past few years.

Pomona lost their QB right before halftime and the guy who finished the game was the 3rd stringer. Pomona has a stud DL in #97 who impacted the game in a major way. He was in the backfield all night and forced the fumble for a TD late. They don't have a RB, the quarterbacks are their run game and they don't get much out of it. Their WRs are down from what they have been. Olsen didn't play and didn't play last week either so he must be hurt. He would make a difference on the outside. Their OL is smaller than they have been the past couple of years. This is much more similar to old school Pomona. They are small, they are super scrappy, they are tough and well coached but not a lot of athletes jump out at you.

CMS can't run the football at all. They tried to run mostly stretch and outside stuff and they couldn't get the corner. They don't get any movement. Really a big departure from the kind of run heavy teams they have had in recent years. They were able to throw it effectively late in the game but it was too little too late. They have a good defense, super well coached and they tackle well but not dominant. The 44 kid is all over the place at LB and they have some secondary guys who can cover. They'll need to get way better on offense if they're going to be anything other than a spoiler.

Redlands meanwhile gained 117 total yards and got thumped by Cal Lu. Great win for the Lutherans who appear to have had quite the defensive reformation. I'll see myself out...

Well, I think that CLU beating Redlands is more a reflection of Redlands down, than CLU up.  CLU struggled to beat a BAD Pacific Lutheran team.  However, as a result, ALL you Redland guys need to call them the Kingsman (Not Regals) for the next 12 months.  Chapman is cream of the crop, La Verne bottom dweller, and a mosh pit for the rest.

SoCalLance

CLU beating Redlands was a surprise I did not see coming. I still believe Redlands defense is legit and can keep them around in any game.

Any word on Russo at PP? He is a hell of a player, would have to see him out for the year.

Ok, lets get this over with. UR's loss to the Regals....The O line, ...you owe an apology to the team...That was brutal, I did not see very many linebackers get picked up blitzing, and even one on one, you all got your butts whipped. Cal Lu's game plan was simple, linebackers read the RB on running downs (flowing, qb wont beat us running)  and we are bring 5 most of the the time on pass plays..Net result no first downs in the first half..embarrassing. The masters of the "look out" block...I can not sugar coat it, made me sick to my stomach.

Defense, no shame in your game...Defense is really good, just can not play all night with a short field. A couple turnovers per game is all a HC can ask for..

Chapman will boat race us if we can not block ...

If you insist on calling CLU the Regals, then what does it say about Redlands football if they lose to a girls team?  You are better than that Old Dog
