A lot of eyes on the 7PM game at PP this weekend. CLU wins and is in the SCIAC Championship game. I don't see them losing this one. Pomona's offense is the worst in the league. If everything plays out like it should it will look like this for the Championship Week.

CLU @ Chapman
Pomona @ Redlands
La Verne @ CMS

Well the Stags took a lot of the steam out of the Cal Lu vs Pomona game tonight. Cooper Nixon rushed for 144 on 31 carries against the Bulldog D. That's a man's statline against a tough Bulldog D that is notoriously stingy against the run. Nixon is also a Harvey-Mudd student and it's very cool to see the Stags get that kind of a contribution from a "Mudder."

Bulldog O went back into its shell as Schmidt had just 135 passing yards on 31 attempts and was sacked 3 times. Bulldogs were able to run it a little but got behind and abandoned the run game.

It's a nice win for the Stags who have a chance to get back to .500 with a win in their crossover game next week (which I think will be against LaVerne after the Leos lost to Chapman this afternoon). Lots of underclassmen contributers for the Stags so maybe something to build on there.

A disappointing step backward for the Bulldogs who looked like they turned a corner in the 2nd half of the season. Shocking, quite frankly, to see the defense give up that kind of rushing performance against a team that has struggled mightily on the ground this year. Bulldogs can still make a seven win season out of it with a win in their crossover next week.

Interesting weekend in the SCIAC.

Pomona completed 50/50 jump balls, won the field position battle and had a pick six that led them to a strong win on senior night versus Cal Lu. Cal Lu was unable to run the ball and Pomona forced the QB to scramble. The poor announcers of Pomona did a great job on the broadcast but was constantly saying with a Pomona win tonight, Cal Lutheran would not be in the SCIAC championship game, which they already had clinched before the game kicked off due to tiebreakers.

CMS has been a completely different team since they found #11 at running back. A running game mixed with strong defense is what led them to a win at Redlands. Redlands offense struggled all throughout SCIAC play only scoring a high of 17 points in regulation outside the La Verne game.  What a waste of an opportunity for Redlands to make the SCIAC championship game with Cal Lutheran getting handled by Pomona.

Chapman and LaVerne looked to be a sloppy game. Turnovers on both sides of the ball which led to touchdowns. Chapman gets the win and improves to 7-0 in conference play.

The key to beating a 3-3-5 defense is running power football. Mix in some traps and misdirection with it and you can will your way against that kind of defensive set up.

Redlands used to be known for high powered offenses, and it's just turned the other way unfortunately.

I'm going to give Coach Good some slack and see the season as a positive, but next season they need to take a leap offensively and just have to hope they do exactly that.

RBF, yes the 3-3-5 was designed for zone read and spread offense to some extent, but UR jumped into a 40 front in the first series, UR tackling was horrible, backers over running or taking a side.

I agree we can not judge the OC for his first year given he showed up in the spring. The game Saturday just proved we do not deserve to play in any significant game. The key will be finding O linemen (I get tired of saying it) ...but its tougher to recruit now than ever. Given our cost and fit for many players, there is a pool of kids we are not getting anymore.

All in all it was a good rebound from last year and lets hope they can build on it. We have a great group of coaches and I would have no problem sending my kids to them.

Disappointing record for the Stags but there should be reason for optimism in Claremont. They were extremely senior heavy in 2024 and had to rebuild the offense basically from scratch. All five of their losses (with one game left to play) were by one score. Their offense returns most of their key pieces for 2026 and the defense will lose some production but returns key guys like George Kruger and Grady Johnson as well as some key pieces in the secondary. I am a big believer in the CMS defensive staff and feel like they will put a competitive group on the field (assuming they can keep the staff around, which is always a concern for me at this level.)

The quarterback position was a struggle for the Stags in 2025, and part of the issue was that they were constantly changing QBs. From what I heard inside the program this led to some bad feelings and factions forming. Hopefully in the offseason they can settle on a starter and allow him to get the lion's share of the reps and get better. Cooper Nixon seems to have taken the reings of the RB position and they need to build strength on the OL in the offseason and get back to moving guys off the line.

Sounds like the Redlands folks are happy with the progress. Have to be proud of a convincing win over the NWC Champ on the road! No doubt the offense showed more signs than 2024 and the defense maintained their quality play. Would be a shock if Redlands is anything but solid to very good on D as long as Mariani and co are in town.

Hopefully Cal Lu can stay with Chapman and make a game out of it for the conference title! If Chapman wins the league is it a done deal that they will go up to the Pine Bowl or is there a chance they get sent east?

Winner of the SCIAC will go and play Whitworth unless Whitworth somehow loses this weekend. In that case, Whitworth would travel to Chapman or play a home game versus Cal Lu.

Going to be some unusual weather for these games tomorrow in Socal.

CMS and Redlands both play on grass fields and with heavy rainfall today and tomorrow, it is going to be a mud bowl. Redlands clearly spray paints their field green so hopefully pomona has a good laundry crew for those white jerseys!  ;)

Redlands OC looks like an E-Sports coach and looks like his placalling experience is from 3AM Tecmo Bowl marathons in Cortner Hall.  I would definitely have an issue sending my kid to play for him.  After years of excuses by Jim Good that it was too hard to be the HC and call plays, this is the best he could do?  Don't worry, SCIAC fans, this year is an outlier for Jim Good.  He will regress to the mean next year. How is the Campaign for Bulldog Athletics going?

I'm willing to give Jim Good a chance based on this seasons improvement. Having said that, Mike Maynard established a standard that the program needs to return to, and if there is not a big leap next season, it's time for change in program leadership.

Say what now? Redlands ground crew does a phenomenal job and it's the best natural surface football field in the west.

Sounds like it was a nightmare out there today. Redlands and CMS both have natural fields so I'm sure it was total mud. This happened years ago in the SCIAC and there were mud bowls at Pomona and Whittier. The turf field at Chapman sounds like it held up better and at least allowed the offenses to function a little.

That being said, all the teams had to play in the same conditions. Sometimes you have to have the mental toughness to overcome all adversity. Props to CMS and Pomona for getting it done today, ugly as it may have been.

Huge congrats to the undisputed 2025 Champion Chapman Panthers. Clearly the class of the conference this year. I imagine that is going to be a pretty heavily coveted job with nationwide interest. It will be very interesting to see who they hire. This feels like a chance for Chapman to make a splash hire and seperate themselves from the pack in the SCIAC.

Congrats to Chapman on a great season and scoring 20 unanswered to beat Cal Lu. 8-0 in conference play which I believe is the first time in the history of the league. Should be a fun one at Whitworth on Saturday.
