My money is on Gallaudet being a one-year affiliate now that they have six core football-playing members.

I was literally thinking the same thing when i tweeted about this just a minute ago. WTF is gallaudet gonna do now?

They said Gallaudet would be a part of the scac through 2027. Does this mean we'll have an odd team out of the SCAC championship then? Is Gallaudet's contract with the scac reduced to just this fall only???

Maybe the language includes something about "only the top six teams in terms of NPI will qualify for the postseason tournament".  Since they are having to line up all their other games outside the SCAC the overall impact is small.

yeah but doesn't lyon being an affiliate member trigger some 2 year waiting period?

Ron Boerger

I'm away from a desktop to dig this back up but there's some kind of wiggle room that allows qualification as long as the great majority of members were unchanged two years running, even with an affiliate.  That clock started two years ago when Lyon came onboard.  Once you are qualified for a bid all you have to do is retain six members in any configuration (and you have two years to get back to any six which is what saved the ASC).

Hanberry Strikes Back. Has had a couple of shrewd moves this year to rally from the Great Payoff and give the league a puncher's chance.

Had a feeling this one was coming, just didn't realize it'd be so soon. Heard some stories about staff members being upset when they left for the SAA in the first place due to the added travel time, and then heard some other rumblings about how it wasn't fiscallly feasible for them to continue with all of the flight travel.

"The move splits up Southwestern and Trinity (Texas), longtime travel partners in the SCAC."

This is from the story on the d3football.com home page.  What's the chances Trinity follows?  Is a Trinity/Southwestern pairing a big deal to the schools?

I would classify it as pretty high if the SCAC wants them back.

Bmo

Trinity and Southwestern are considered peer institutions in Texas, but it's relatively recent that they have competed in the same conference. Southwestern was NAIA until the mid-1990s, when it originally joined the SCAC. So it's not like a Rhodes/Sewanee thing. No longer having a drivable conference foe might change Trinity's calculus on the SAA.

Ron Boerger

The SCAC is in a good place with 12 schools - not sure they want a 13th.  Trinity doesn't have a lot of options if they don't - it would be ironic if they were forced to the ASC due to there being literally no other options.  The SAA is looking very insecure at this moment and there are rumblings that there are other schools looking for an escape hatch.

Honestly? If the SCAC doesn't accept Trinity they are not learning from history. The Texas conferences need every football member they can get, because you never know what is going to happen next.

Ron Boerger

Oh, I hear that, but there could be some bad blood left from Trinity leaving just as it was going to get that auto-bid in football and convincing Southwestern to come along to make the move possible (if, as seems at least possible, that actually happened).  Then there's the overall dominance of the SCAC where Trinity won the President's Trophy for 15-plus years running and usually by a wide margin.
