If you're advocating for Geneseo to get votes based on a Nov. 18 game against NYU, perhaps you should look at Geneseo's past five games. It's clear it's not Nov. 18 anymore.

Pat

I certainly wasn't advocating for Geneseo to get votes. I happen to agree with you.
I was merely stating to scooterman (somewhat tongue in cheek) how NYU got 2 votes. In fact I sent my Top 25 to Mr. Ypsi for his posters poll on Sun. evening and had 24 out of the 25 in the D3 poll. I omitted Guilford and added Oxy. I think scooterman wasn't advocating Geneseo either. He probably didn't feel NYU deserved any votes for losing to a 5th place in their conference 10-4 Geneseo.

magicman--You see right through me man! There are alot of factors playing into the North Country trip. Potsdam and the Burg are difficult places to play so if you walk out with a win you feel like you have accomplished something. I do know this to be factual though--the Burg's standards for admission is lower than the Port. Carter, Frazier and Arteberry were denied admission at the Port. We all know they played at Plattsburgh. Anyway it should be a great weekend for Div 3 hoops in the North Country. Enjoy!!!

As far as referees in the North Country. There are at least 3 that I know of that are from Potsdam and the surrounding area. One is Brian Fairchild, who's son and daughter both play ball at Potsdam. I would assume he doesn't do Potsdam games anymore, I would think he still does St. Lawrence, Clarkson, and Canton games. Another is Gordie Atkins, who is from the Ogdensburg's area . The last one is a guy who's name doesn't come to mind but is a older fella who is just a little guy who either looks drunk or smells like cigarettes all the time. As I do recall, Plattsburgh usually has guys from Albany area do their games. Any way you look at it trips to Potsdam/Plattsburgh aren't fun because of 1) weather, 2) long trip, and 3) never knowing which referee crew you will get.

At places like Cortland/SUNYIT, you usually get Syracuse refs and occasionally get some Southern Tier guy at Cortland. At Fredonia/Buff St. you'll get Buffalo guys. Oneonta/New Paltz you'll get Albany/Poughkeepsie guys. Brockport/Geneseo you'll get Rochester and very randomly Buffalo. Oswego either gets Syracuse or Utica guys. Potsdam will get a range of Syracuse, Utica, and North Country for home games.

"...Any way you look at it trips to Potsdam/Plattsburgh aren't fun because of 1) weather, 2) long trip, and 3) never knowing which referee crew you will get...."

1. Weather - since when is the weather any worse in Potsdam and Plattsburgh than in the Buffalo, Rochester and Oswego areas?  Having made those trips for more years than I want to admit to, I would say I would much rather travel up the Northway to Plattsburgh than go anywhere near Rte 81 or Rte 104 during a snow storm.

2. long trip.    The travel from Plattsburgh and Potsdam are equally as long and arduous to Buffalo, Cortland, Rochester, Oneonta, New Paltz.

3.  A team will get this no matter where they go.  From my experience I see the same groups of referees  covering the same teams for many many years. Some are good, some are bad, some are too horrible to use words to illustrate their questionable judgements and interpretations of the rules.   To make it seem like Potsdam AND Plattsburgh lead the field with "homer" referees is short sighted.    I come from the era when Pete Pavia, Murph Shapiro and a couple of times even Larry Lembo were on crews in the Rochester area. I believe Murph has been related to MCC since that time and was fairly close to Panaggio.   ALL areas in NY and probably the country has perceived home team bias crews or individuals.

I can only comment from my personal observations-of about 15 d-3 games this year ranging from Buffalo to NYC to Albany to Potsdam.  I thought the best crew and most fair was a crew I saw in Elmira.  Second was at SUNYAC Potsdam. The best home cooking @NYU with RIT a close second and Lehman College a strong third.  My reasons NYU- Huge 3 pt field goal waived off by a questionable call way away from the ball & what seemed like about 12 travel calls that took points away.  RIT - 3 welcome to Rochester foul calls on best player in about first 3 minutes of the game and a T for agruing about the scorekeeper letting the clock run for about a second & half down to .1.  RIT was up 17 at the time and made both T's.  Lehman enjoys a 37-20 advantage from the foul line and ends the game on a 12-2 run where every point came from the line to win by 3.  Special mention- one individual ref in Potsdam just incompetent against the home team in a Liberty League game- just awful calls.

Excellent comments about refs seen throughout NYS. The human factor will always be part of the game and that's what makes it so interesting. I think most officials try to do their best to be fair and call what they see! We all admit there are a few, for whatever their reasons, are homers and this will never change. How is that for the obvious. I can think of a half dozen that think the games are played to watch them officiate-- too bad!

RIT - 3 welcome to Rochester foul calls on best player in about first 3 minutes of the game and a T for agruing about the scorekeeper letting the clock run for about a second & half down to .1.

Every time Plattsburgh played at any school in Rochester in games I was at, their best or best two players had exactly the SAME thing happen to them.  Not always that quickly but always before halfway through the first half.    I don't usually comment about time keepers and score keepers unless I actually catch them sleeping or cheating.  Been there, done that.  I had at least 3 home scorekeepers replaced for various reasons.  One was not recording time outs. I called ref over to notify him the other team (Oneonta I believe) was out of time outs.  When the ref didn't see any in the official book, he didn't call the T but removed the scorer and I became the official book.   In a game at Middlebury 1978-79 season we beat them at the buzzer (even though it never went off).  The moronic clock operator never turned on the auto buzzer switch.  I told him to because he didn't do it for the first half either.  He also was slow on the draw shutting the clock off.   I called the officials over three times about him.  HE was pissed off at me.  During the end of the game discussion the officials asked me about the situation and thank god they were communicating with each other and in position.  They allowed the shot, we beat them by one. The Middlebury coaching staff  was furious at me for taking to the officials.   They wouldn't allow me to use their phone to call in the scores to the ECAC, SUNYAC or our local paper.     Ahhh the good old days.  ;D

Speaking of weather. Heard the Oswego area just got about 3 feet of snow, in the past couple of days.  Plattsburgh, on the other hand has about 2 inches on the ground

Sounds like you've made the rounds this year. Are you planning to attend the PBurgh-Bport game this Sat at Memorial Hall? Weather report for the weekend sounds favorable for travelers.

How about you Cards? Gonna make that long trip up from Western N.Y. to see what should be the best regular season SUNYAC game this year?

This is group project week in my MBA course.  :-\  I would if I could, but I can't so I won't.
I'm already there in spirit.   I may come up for Senior Night the last home game.  I will also be
going to Cortland at Cortland.   I will clear my schedule for their NCAA run.

I will also attend the end of the year dinner that the Canadian Studies guy has each year. I had a blast
last year talking with Tom Brennan (Vermont coach and current ESPN talking head).  Turns out he grew up
in the same home town as my mom and knows some of the same people.
