Saint of Old

Congrats to all who made the cut.
It is not an easy thing to achieve this honor.
A special shoutout to the players picked still who are still participating. Talking to you Josh Kirkland (Although Castillo should be there as well).

It also gives me great pleasure to say big up to the African Saint Marvin Sibanda who in my opinion will likely leave the program as arguably one of the best to ever touch it!

Well done one and all.

Steven Arthur played for Milwaukee School of Engineering, to be exact about it. (just so that's not mistaken for D1 UW-Milwaukee).

Any obvious deletions?  Any other "odd" additions?
When does the D3 All-American List come out/

I have not had the chance to really study the list, but the first thing that jumped out at me was the paucity of defenders.  Obviously, defenders don't generally get the love, but there are only 9 on the list in total and only 3 on the First Team.  This compares with 13 total and 5 on the First Team last year.  You might say there was just a different mix of top players this year, but the total number of the First Team also dropped from 16 to 15.  Could have added a fourth defender for free.

Just looking at schools, unless I miscounted, Messiah and W&L led with three each, whereas the entire NESCAC earned only 4.

I wouldn't call this an obvious omission, but it was interesting that Richard Gillespie of Chicago is a first team AA, but Griffin Wada isn't on any of the lists.  They were both first team All Region, not that this means Wada should make an AA team, but I do wonder how voters separated the two.  My guess is that they used offensive stats - Gillespie has 2 goals and 3 assists whereas Wada has only 2 assists - rather than made any kind of considered review of their defensive performance over the season.  Not exactly fair for a defender, but may also explain the fewer defenders this year if it turns out that the other defenders who made the list also seemed to have some goals/assists to their names.

Wada and Gillespie are the ying and yang of that defense, pretty inseparable in terms of the impact they have. It's just Gillespie is flashier because he's more of an athlete and runs to the attack and can be a focal point on set pieces. They did Wada dirty. But the USC awards are barely legitimate anyway, they screw up every year.

At the outset of the season, Jim Hutchinson and I (aka D3soccer.com) did not plan to do the Top 25 or All-America teams this year. We ended up doing the Top 25, but as of yesterday we still had no plan to do the All-America teams. Today, however, I can share that we will do our best to name All-America teams one last time. After keeping the website running one more season than we intended, albeit without any columns or articles, it felt wrong to not close the season with All-America teams. That said, we have no set timetable. Our families and personal well-being will come first during the holiday season. So I wouldn't expect the teams to be released any earlier than in most recent years (i.e., a month into the new year).

Over the years we have appreciated the interest in our rankings and awards and the compliments we recieve. We believe and are told that both are positive additions to the D-III soccer community. We have always striven to do the best we can and have enjoyed providing an alternate to the NSCAA/USC rankings and awards. While we won't miss the long hours and sacrifices that were required to pull off many of the things we have done at D3soccer.com, we will miss the satisfaction of contributing to the D-III soccer community in a meaningful way. And we genuinely and earnestly hope that the things we had a hand in over the years continue to exist and evolve in some form, whether through a revitalized D3soccer.com or something competely new.

So, be patient with us, but keep your eyes out for All-America teams in the new year.

Much appreciated, Christan. I find the D3soccer.com All-American teams to always be an improvement and much more legitimate over the goofy coaches association version.

I said this last year, and I'll say it again this year: Every season you look at the D3soccer.com All-American team and the USC All-American team, and it's blindingly obvious to anyone who follows D3 soccer that the former and (most definitely) not the latter is the gold standard in D3 soccer honors.

Shankly’s Disciple

Without intending any disrespect to any players listed on the All American teams, I'll make the case for one adjustment and one inclusion. Williams Captain Nick Boardman is listed on the 3rd team. His play all season and certainly on Williams' deep NCAA run have made Williams nearly impossible to score against and makes the case for him to be included as high as the first team.

Similarly, the other key defensive contributor for Williams is Ben Diffley, whom I would suggest is arguably the best goalkeeper in DIII. He's tall at 6'5" and dominant in his box while also being an extremely athletic and agile shot stopper. The Williams soccer stats page lists Diffley with a .896 save percentage and 14 clean sheets. And that's while playing the most difficult 2022 schedule in the country.

So being new here what is the difference bewteen the D3 soccer and coaches All -American?  I would assume they would be similar....However, at the same time, I am sure there is some coaching bias (I will vote for your player you vote for mine) that affects results just as there are biases on this forum towards certain teams/coaches.

Bottom line is there will always be bias/subjectivity in a sport such as soccer and that is what makes for great debate.   Is scoring goals more important than making the run that opens up space for a teammate, hustling back once control of possession is lost (hustle).  Soccer is a simple game yet at the same time very complex.  Casual observers rarely see the little things that players do that make them special.

If only soccer was like track and field where All Americans are the top finishers at National event...but then there would be no forum to discuss.

Will be interested to see the D3 All-American List
