After seeing what passing did for Bethel, which is not their strong point anyhow, why would UWW resort to passing when the run game is probably their strong point on offense.

To keep the defense honest. Short routes, backs coming out
of the backfield. Play action, short routes. I'm not saying going
vertical. I'm suggesting shorter, higher probability of success
throws.

They tried...a little.  Wilbur did throw it nine times, but only completed two of them (one to a UWW WR and another to the Bethel safety  ;D ). I think I counted two dropped passes, one led to that INT. The others were just bad throws. Our Cali QB really struggled in that weather, even on the short routes. But yes, once that big lead was established, there was no reason to pass to risk turning it over...again. Especially when both our backs were gashing that Bethel defense. the best part was, we didn't need to keep Bethel honest. They knew we were going to run the ball and they still couldn't stop it. By the time that fourth quarter came around their Dline was gassed. Vintage UWW playoff football.

In Texas I'm guessing we'll see more a balanced attack. The Bethel game was an anomaly if you look at Cole's numbers the throughout this season. Lucky for Cole that was the last time, in his football career, he'll have to play in such weather.

Great post 02.

As Woody said, only 3 things can happen when you pass the ball and 2 of them are bad.  Why throw the ball if you don't have to?  Especially in bad weather.  Sounds like a great adjustment to the weather conditions by the UWW staff.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Congrats to UWW on the win on Saturday.  I wish that BU hadn't gotten off to such a slow start with the blocked punt and INT, but kudos to UWW for making things happen.

When Bethel was inside the UWW 5, down 23-12, I was thinking that they really might have something going if they could make it 23-18 (let's be honest, we weren't going to be successful on a PAT kick), but that INT in the endzone took all of the wind out of our sails.

Hope your squad can take down the Texans!

Absolutely. Bethel had UWW back on their heels on defense, we had no answer for your QB. If they would have scored there, it would have been anyone's game at that point.

Also, I'm glad we don't have to line up against number 31 again. What a motor he had.

Might have some rain this weekend but shouldn't be bad. UMHB is not a team you want to be one dimensional against. You don't need a vertical passing game, as SJU found out that is probably what the Cru defends against best, but you have to throw the ball. I think if you're patient enough to go underneath on them all the way down the field you can have some success. The UMHB QB and offense has to be better. Whether its scheme or play, if SJu can hold Miller to less than 3 ypc, I have to imagine UWW is more than capable of doing the same. They didn't ask Hammack to do much (and it sounds like that won't change), so he has to be better than 53% completion rate. UMHB has to be the favorite, but if they are as vanilla and predictable this week as they were against the Johnnies they are going to lose.

Yeah, MHB will be favorites for sure and they should win this game. UWW has only been one dimensional in games when it's 35 degrees, 20-30 mph winds and rainy. The Hawks' QB was Offensive Play of the Year in the WIAC, so he's more than capable when the conditions aren't horrible. Looks like it's only suppose to rain in the morning in Belton on Saturday and in the mid 50's. However, it's only Monday, so I'm not taking the forecast to heart quite yet.

In Texas, we contend that Darrell Royal said it first.

A little late but a big congrats to UWW on your win. Now, go down to Texas and show them some real football. Hey, you guys deserve to be in the Stagg Bowl. And playing Mount Union. UWW and UMU have 19 national championships between them. Who else deserves to battle for the big one?
So, Go Warhawks! Nice to see you back!   ;D

Thanks MUC- congratulations to your guys as well.
Hopefully we'll have reason for lots of banter next week. In the meantime, UWW has this beast of an opponent to figure out.
One thing remains the same for me in the week leading up to a game w UMHB- I have no idea how UWW is going to get it done.

I kind of hope it is UWW and Mount! It will be like a delightful trip in a time machine back to my college days. Does everyone have their long black athletic socks, key chain lanyards, and flat billed hats ready for a trip back to 2009??
