It's sad so many lives are shattered by a senseless event like this.

Coaches touch our lives in ways a community may not realize.  The number of young men's lives that are positively affected from having been a part of something greater than themselves can never be be denigrated by the blot of one insane mind.

This senseless act was just that.  You can not make sense of it, you could never prevent it in hindsight.

To honor this coach is to honor what he stood for and how he did it.  Iowa was blessed to have this man as a son and citizen.  We shall not focus on what took him from us.  Focus instead on who he is and was and what he meant to us and Coach Thomas will live forever.

Heys,

I will consider coming to that game should the Wartburg/Central game not have an impact on the conference AQ.  I would like to see you the Mrs, and Heys3 again.  Is 3 still growing?  Never hurts to do some recruiting  ;D ;D

Attention IIAC Coaches:  Rev. 2 is approximately 6' tall, having started his Freshman year at 5'7".  He's still a peachfuzz faced and squeaky voiced kid.  He's got some growing left.  On the flip side, he weighs all of 130 lbs....or about 120 lbs. lighter than big bro.

Freshman year:
Football: (5'7" 115lb. TE)  4 Recepts. Caught 2 PAT's.  Was the backup to a 6'1" 185lb. man-child.  Rev.3 had the heart and hands.  The Giant had the size and very little desire....hence, the PT that Rev. 3 got when there was no reason for him to be there instead of the other kid.  The HS coaches know who Jr. is now and they are counting on Rev. 3 to grow.

Basketball:  Started at PG and won the team's Panther Award - overall outstanding performer, on and off court.  Didn't start growth spurt until January.

Baseball:  Started majority of the games at 3B after coming out late from basketball.  The team's most versatile player, he saw time as backup catcher, 2B, LF, CF, and RF.  Hitting needs work, had to adjust to his new strikezone.  Plays in ultra-competitive San Diego/SoCal Area

I scout him as follows:  Projects to be a plus size kid.  Needs to work on his speed and strength.  Long and lean build, deceptively quick for his body style.  Smart player, student of the game-type, outstanding student in the classroom.  Hard worker and is his own toughest critic.  Quietly intense.  His mom likes him too.   :)

wow....read this:

On June 20, 2009, at approximately 9:05 p.m., Cedar Falls police officers were dispatched to 802 N. Union Road on a report of a male subject who had broken out several windows on the house with a baseball bat and then driven his vehicle through the overhead garage door. Just prior to officers arriving on scene, the subject fled in his vehicle and was observed leaving the area westbound on West 1st Street. Officers gave pursuit out of Cedar Falls and into Grundy County. During the pursuit speeds occurred in excess of 80 mph. Adjoining counties and the Iowa State Patrol were notified of the pursuit. The subject was stopped and apprehended in Butler County by the Butler County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol. The subject was identified as:
Mark Daryl Becker Age 24
21306 270th St
Parkersburg, IA 50665.
The Butler County Sheriff's office took Becker into custody, and Becker was apparently later taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Cedar Falls Police was awaiting notification that the subject was to be released from custody in order to arrest Becker and file the charges relevant to the Cedar Falls incident. The Cedar Falls Police has charges pending against Becker for Criminal Mischief 2nd degree, Eluding law enforcement officials and other traffic offenses. Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree and Eluding are Class D felonies.

I just listened to Coach Ed Thomas' recorded talk at an athletic banquet. He was the real deal. As he now has been united with his Heavenly Mentor, may His Spirit empower those who remain here to live godly lives and, in that way, honor this coach by embracing and living out what he stood for and how  well he did it. Blessed are they that mourn, for they SHALL be comforted.

I recognized Coach Thomas' name from the comments that the IIAC posters had made about A-P and the recovery from the tornado.

My condolences to the family and friends...

We are so very sorry about Coach Ed Thomas. We heard about it on a Portland radio station this morning, and the announcer said the entire state of Iowa was in shock, which is understandable with a man like that. My heart sank when I heard that he was the football coach from Aplington-Parkersburg. Those folks have endured enough.

His son looked like a class act during the press conference. No surprise there, I guess. That poor family.

Hang in there, WH.

I didn't not know Coach Thomas, but what I saw on TV after the storm last year he sounded like the real deal. My prayer go out to his family and friends and to WH. I had the displeasure of investigating a couple of these thing and I still don't know or understand why anyone would do something like this.

Has anyone heard from WH? He's vacationing out of state....I would hate to think he heard of this on the national news rather than notified first by friends and family.... :(

I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Considering what happened in A-P today ... and how it affects so many of us in so many different ways ... I am reminded of words which are from a grave marker from the 1700's in Lancaster, New Hampshire ... words which I have spoken at so many funeral and memorial services ...

"It is a fearful thing to love that which death can touch."

Peace be with all who have been touched by Coach Thomas's death.

I know members of the AP football family would have tried to communicate w/ WH via txt, tweet or FB, but if he is able to receive @ his location I don't know. His last message on FB was 10:30 last night. Also his mother-in-law is AP resident as well.

I called and texted him and his younger brother, who is also on the trip, as soon as I found out about things this morning.  Couldn't get a hold of him...not sure if that's because their phones weren't working or because of the time difference.

I got back home to Dubuque about a half hour ago from Parkersburg and I'm still having a tough time organizing my thoughts.  Ed Thomas was an absolute giant of a human being and the world is a worse place without him in it.  I had the honor of meeting the man a handful of times.  Most notable was during the first week after last year's tornado.  Coach Thomas lost his own home in that storm, but that fact couldn't have been further from his mind.  He was much more concerned with helping his friends and neighbors rebuild, and with getting his "Sacred Acre" back in shape for football season.  A lot of people outside of A-P questioned why so much effort was being put into repairing the field, but Thomas knew what football meant to that community and how much his program's resurrection could be a source of hope and pride for the rest of the community.

Second in my mind was the conversation I had with Coach Thomas during a fundraiser for he community about this time last year.  Everyone there wanted to talk to Ed, and he gave each of those people a moment of his time.  Given what he'd been through, nobody would have blamed him if he wanted to shy away from the crowds, but Ed just wasn't that kind of guy.

I'd definitely echo PH's sentiment of remembering Thomas for who he was, and not how he left us.  There is going to be a lot of blame-gaming in the wake of this tragedy, but the fact of the matter is you can't stop crazy.  If this Becker wanted to hurt Thomas badly enough, it wouldn't have mattered how long he was kept in the hospital, why he had access to a gun, or any of the above.  Thomas' son, Aaron spoke at the 4:00 news conference, and mentioned that his dad would not have been angry with the troubled young man.  If anything, Thomas would have done everything in his power to get Becker help. THAT was the kind of man that Ed Thomas was.  He was not simply focused on making the young men around him better football players, but better fathers, better husbands, better men in general.

Well said PH.  Having watched AP football from across the field its easy to see how the quality of his teams reflected the quality of the coach.  The HS coaching fraternity was lucky to have included him.  Our prayers go out to his immediate family and his extended family which includes all of  A-P.
