George,

I noticed the same thing (playoff nervous) QB Grant Leslie was off on many of his pass's to start the game but settled down to finish 12 of 21 for 248 yards.

What a day Merben Woo had, 279 yards of total offense including 169 receiving.
Woo scored 3 Td's all more than 50 yards. :o

Time to get ready for UW-W.

Can someone give me an answer to my question about noise makers at games??
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

You are correct.  NCAA rules take precedence over conference rules (or lack thereof).  In regards to artificial noisemakers, they are illegal by NCAA playoff standards.  So the woman you are referring to SHOULD have had her pot and stick taken from her (or asked to put it away).

......I vaguely remember a rule like that from back in the day..... ::)

As far as Willamette's line being that big? They didn't look that big to me yesterday. Maybe they shrunk.

QuoteSome good photos of the game.
WU/Oxy photo gallery by Timothy J. Gonzalez, Statesman Journal

A comment on the boards about WU big linemen being from California (take that OXY) caused me to unscientifically look at their roster;

seven (7) JC transfers

seven (7) major college transfers (do you consider Whitworth major?)

forty (40) California state players (counting some of the above again)

Is that serious recruiting or does everybody on the team want to go to law school?

It is some good recruiting by WU's coaches, but it makes perfect sense.  Speckman has a million ties in California and that helps pull in the Cali boys.   They spend alot of their time physically recruiting in the state because they figure there are so many damn kids down there, they'll get something; and something usually turns into the bulk of their class.

One curious thing I noticed about OXY's squad is that for a team located in Southern California, they have very few minorities on their team.  Maybe it was just because they had a smaller roster (for playoff purposes), but I couldn't spot many during the game...

OXY fans or anyone familiar with the team...am I way off?

Looks more like a basketball score.

No way---this game is a basketball score!

So, both defenses sat down and the offenses scored at will. Must have been interesting. That score reminds me of the old 8-man football scores.

OxyBob, where are you? I'm waiting for your recap of the game.

I realize The Speck is a respected coach who attends many coaching  seminars. Interesting two of the kids are from Cathedral High School near Dodger Stadium, 3 miles from Occidental.

Pandora's Box

I had encouraged OxyBob to take in some local flavor while up in the NW so he stayed last night in the Morrison Hotel, I believe that was the name, near the Burnside Bridge up in Portland.
Today is a travel day, if he made it through the night.

At the UMHB/HSU game today they had an NCAA rule in effect that you couldn't go down on the field until after ten minutes for a "cooling off" period.  This is not the D3 that I know.

It actually had some benefit because one of the players had a serious injury on the last play, but they had announced this as early as the first quarter.

Gray,

They did the 10 minute cooling down period yesterday at McCullough and have done it at every game at Oxy . . . I think it's a rule for the full season.

I don't think that's accurate . . . Willamette scored on big plays, Oxy's scores were more methodical. Read the link to the Oxy article that I posted that includes stats re total yards and number of plays.  Willamette moved the ball further on about half the plays that Oxy had.

Neither of the defensive units sat down.

Tooth,

I didn't mean the Willamette/Oxy game.
I was referring to the link MonroviaCat posted about the game between Abilene Christian and Texas A&M. The score was 93-68. Sorry for the confusion. I should have quoted the post.

Another WU connection.  They have many more students at WU from Cathedral and will have many more athletes from there in the future.

About 10 years ago a coach moved from South Gate H.S. to Cathedral H..S.and took 7 of the best players with him. Their senior year they went 11-0 and messed up the championship game. I knew some of the kids when they were ten.
Looks like it's time for me to drop a couple LINFIELD brochures by the good Padres. Looks like the same for Mater Dei. Coach Bruce is an old neighbor.

From the 2008 Division III Men's Football Championship Handbook:

15. Proper crowd control must be in place at all times. Security for the visiting team is a
priority. Artificial noisemakers are not allowed.

I know that people were looking for the Oxy fan with the Air Horn early in the game, not sure if s/he was ever located...
