One last wrestling post for the year:

The Gophers placed second at the NCAA tournament behind Penn State.  It was a very good finish for them--I don't think anyone realistically thought that any team would have a shot at Penn State, who put five wrestlers in the finals (out of ten weight classes).  The Gophers wrestled a solid tournament, finishing with 7 all-Americans, the most of any team.  Coach J Robinson was named the coach of the year.

Highlights:
Zach Sanders placed third at 125, capping an excellent career as a four-time all-American.
Dylan Ness lost a tight match in the finals to place second at 149--as a redshirt freshman.
Logan Storley placed 6th at 174--as a true freshman.
Tony Nelson won his first national championship at heavyweight, beating the defending national champ--as a redshirt sophomore.

Next season should be great.  They return 5 all-Americans and a host of other tough wrestlers!

Duffman, I forgot this was on and didn't turn it on until about 1/2 way through.  Tony Nelson was impressive.  I really didn't think he had a shot.  I still think that takedown call was a little questionable.

Yes, they look really tough next year.  Too bad Jake Deitchler had to retire from wrestling.  Would have been interesting to see how he'd have done.

5 years ago, yes, but the way they are calling matches now, that was 100% a takedown.

That was a big blow to the team.  With Deitchler, I think they would have had a legitimate shot at the team title.

The Gophers will have Michael Kroells of Scott West on their roster next season. Last year he went undefeated at 215 and finished the year with a GPA of 4.0 and this year he was undefeated and moved up to 285 for the section and state tournaments. Another state title and the GPA remains at 4.0. Great kid! I talked to him Saturday at the St. Patrick's Day celebration in Belle Plaine, his home town.

Gophs should be loaded at HWT for a while.  Nelson has two more years.  Jake Kettler is a tough wrestler--he's taking an olympic redshirt this year.  I haven't seen Kroells wrestle, but I have heard very good things about him.

Duffman, I would be surprised if Kroells wrestles at heavyweight for the U. He wrestled at 220 most of this season and only went up to 285 so he could have some competition in the state meet. He wrestled the defending state champ at 285 from Caledonia and beat him in the finals.

Speaking of Buck Rock n' Roll Zumhofe, I should probably try and get him up for a Johnnie game this fall and the Stiftungsfestivities. Maybe we could have him bring along the wrestling ring and put on a show during the tailgate. Very entertaining! ::)

No googling for the answer.

What wrestler had a song written about him with the lyrics:  "Do the hammer lock, you turkeynecks!"

BDB, you can't play on this one.  Too easy for you.  However, you may "have a party, take all the dollies down Wisconsin Avenue and go dancing."

I won't say the answer, ROR.  I had to use Mr Google.  It was a crusher to admit the failure.

Out of HS, I left for Macalester and then the Navy when I wasn't getting what I wanted from college.  Turns out chipping non-skid off the deck with a pneumatic hammer wasn't my cup of tea either.  So, when deciding what to do with my life as my tour came to an end I reflected back my only interaction with SJU.  I went to a football game with my dad (it must have been SJU's 16-0 win at Mac in '87) with these two guys in the stands supporting the Johnnies.

I reckoned if SJU was good enough for them, it was good enough for me.

EDIT: Actually, my memory banks are clearing.  It was only Bud at Mac.  I think The Baron was at a dolphin show at a zoo.   I wonder where that was.  I'll have to ask the folks.

You think he can drop to 197?  I've never seen him in person.

BDB- "a tousand stitches" was Da Crusher's line ,not Mad Dogs. As well, ROR Da Crusher.
On a side note, in my early 20's I worked with Gary DeRusha for 2 years. The stories he could tell about his childhood with AWA wrestlers around the house as his dad was Al DeRusha the promoter for the AWA.
Also, Gary was a referee in the WWF in the early 1980s for a couple years, that is a whole 'nother set of stories!
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

I agree, but the wire brushing was fun.  And throwing the chunks of solidified epoxy non-skid at each other was fun.  What ship were you on?

Oh you were on a target.   ;D

I agree, I have seen some pictures of the new mess decks and crews quarters on the new subs, they don't know how good they got it.
