The return of Terry Smith should be a fun one on Saturday when the Scots take on Finlandia...

Actually, Alma hosts Finlandia on Wednesday night ... The Lions make the trip down to play the Comets on Tuesday night and on the way home, they will stop in Alma for a game!

Sorry. Meant Wednesday. It was saturday when I posted that....

Calvin will resume play on December 29 after two weeks of gathering rust.  The Knights will meet the Pirates of Whitworth, ranked #8 in DIII.  Interested fans can wacth Whitworth at 7:00pm (EST) tonight on live video feed at http://www.whitworth.edu/Athletics/Teams/Basketball/livefeed.htm.  Should be a blowout for the Pirates, but at least it will be a chance to scout them in action prior to the game on the 29th.

Well, so much for a blowout!

Whitworth won 78-76 on a last second 3 after NW had hit 2 threes in the final minute to take the lead.  ???

Tonight's game:

Franklin at Trine --   Franklin comes in 5-4, 3-1 in the HCAC, they were picked 8th so at the moment are doing well in the league, but have much tougher opponents ahead.  They've lost to all 4 good teams they've played, and have beaten all 5 bad to meh teams they've played.  Their best win looks like Bluffton, or maybe Fontbonne.  http://www.franklingrizzlies.com/mens-sports/mens-basketball/schedule/

Trine on the other hand is looking to extend their current 5 game winning streak.  This is a return game from last season where Franklin won at home 89-86 in OT in the first game of the year for both.

It looks as though there could be a couple good individual match-ups with Franklin's leading scorer 6-6 Will Conoley and Trine's second leading score 6-8 Tim Pearcy (Scott Rogers could also get this assignment for Trine).   Trine's leading scorer 6-1 PG Ian Jackson will match with Franklin's second leading scorer 5-10 PG Bailey Howard.

Statistically its hard not to make Trine a favorite to win this one at home.  Trine is not a particularly good rebounding team, but Franklin isn't either, nor will they be much taller than the Thunder, if at all.  If there is a clear difference its from behind the arc where Trine is a pretty solid 42%, but they don't shoot much.  Franklin is pretty bad from 3, burning the nets at just 26%.  Both teams shoot the ball pretty well overall though, so it could be a pretty good offensive game.  If Trine wins the turnovers/steals battle like they should and stay close to even on the boards they should win.

This would be another nice in-region win for the league.

Anyone know what happened to Trine's Deon Thompson from last year's team?

He's playing power forward for North Carolina. Same name, must be same guy, right?

I think that Hope is underrated at #15, hurt in the polls by the one loss at D-1 WMU, which some pollsters may not take the time to look into.

Marietta probably doesn't deserve to be considered among the best 25 teams in the nation right now, but it does give Hope a really good opportunity to beat a ranked opponent, for what it's worth.

I'd love to see Calvin give Hope an assist up the polls by defeating Whitworth on the 29th.  It's not often that you have the chance to take a school's provost and their Top 10 men's basketball ranking in the same month.   :)

I believe both Hope and Marietta are subject to anchoring bias from the preseason poll.

"Anchoring bias"--ScottieDawg, yes! . . . and I'm so impressed that you would know and apply that concept.  If only I had 200 posts and could give you +Karma . . . but maybe I can after this post?   :)

I take pride in my "anti-anchoring bias"   :)
