I see the natives are getting restless, so as Commissioner of the Annual Golden Thermostat "Last On" competition, I declare the games open!

Eligibility: You must reside in a Canada facing cone from northern Iowa, west up through eastern Dakotas and east including the entire state of Wiscy. We will throw in the UP for good measure.

Rule #1: On the honor system, if your home thermostat is turned to "heat" and your machine in the basement kicks in firing up the fossil fuels to blow heat throughout the domicile you must post on here that you are out!

Rule #2: Heat producing fireplaces, electric heaters etc. are considered the same as the Rheem, Amana or whatever in your basement. Basically, if you are enjoying any source of heat in your home besides the sunshine through your window or your hot wife, you are out of the competition.

Now, I will caution any rookies to this competition,it is not to be taken lightly. We have veterans to this that will challenge the very extremes of household comfort.

Exclusions: Any heat you enjoy in your car, at your friends, at work etc does not count. This competition turf is your domicile where you call home.

Good luck! We have a multiple time champ in Duffman that will once again be tough to beat, and Retired Old Rat has owned the common wall category.

That being said, "I'm Out!" Never a contender but always warm.

Quote from: sju56321 on September 07, 2026, 10:13:35 AMBTW-not that you want to see your punter much-by SJU has fantastic punter. One punt, wiped out by roughing, went about 70 yards from punt position, so maybe 63 from scrimmage and the other was over 50, I believe.

I'd be bringing the house when he's into punt...great leg but he needs to get off quicker. Looked like Lax almost blocked one.

SJU just defeated a WIAC power picked by many to win the conference. The fact that LAX came close to blocking one punt attempt is no surprise. Congrats Johnnies on a quality win.

Quote from: sjujohnnie on August 24, 2026, 03:35:39 PMThe two churches that make up the parish I attend in the Sioux City Diocese in northwest Iowa will be locking the church doors five minutes prior to Mass starting. When that horrific school shooting in Minneapolis happened last August the parish council decided steps needed to be taken in the facilities plan to address the potential for active shooters, etc. Very sad sign of the times!

As for the return of football, what is the word about this year's St John's squad from those more in the know? Starting the season with a tough test against La Crosse!

Sounds like they're finally getting serious about people being there in time to say the Rosary before Mass.

And just try being one of those that leave right after Communion!

Quote from: OzJohnnie on August 21, 2026, 08:58:51 PMMrs Oz and I have had a week's holiday in tropical Far North Queensland (FNQ, in the local lingo) and as I was walking through part of the hotel, I noticed that not only has Gough Whitlam, Australia's only Prime Minister to be dismissed by the Queen/King, been here, but Bobby beat me here as well.  I'm having a year of Bobby.  You're everywhere.

From the boyhood home in Hibbing to some long ago tour stop at FNQ (see what I did there), that's a quality Dylan find in your year of Bobby.

Similar to the Seinfeld bit "Nothing finer than being in your diner" episode. But then again, maybe not.

Quote from: OzJohnnie on July 23, 2026, 04:25:21 AMIt's not even spider season, being the middle of winter, but coming home from work, we find this baby huntsman drowned in the dog's waterbowl by the front door.  They'll get about three times as big as this in the summer.  It's a normal-sized dog bowl for a border collie, for reference.

Just the fact that there is something known as "spider season" down under creeps me out.

And then Doggo Bowser comes running up all thirst laden and has that staring back.

Add the agressive, ripped 'roos running around and I'd need to carry a 7 iron around at all times.

Heh.  I knew you were a good chance to get it. I did wonder, though, if we would need to wait for Bobby himself to log in with the answer.

Didn't mean to spoil the fun, I really didn't know. I did know you are "like a rolling stone" around on the Iron Range for a visit. So of course, Hibbing is a must on the tour along with the US Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth.

There is no upside to being disrespectful to a fellow WIAC member.

Breathing that fresh, iron range air agrees with you, Oz.

Just like the days of youth.

Quote from: BDB on June 07, 2026, 02:31:07 PMLooks like you just did.

I did no such thing.

According to this logic, from now on it's UW-River and UW-Stevens and UW-Eau.

We all use abbreviations, but not because it's too much work or takes too long to spell out the schools name correctly.

Quote from: BDB on June 07, 2026, 07:01:40 AMIt's officially UW-Stout Polytechnic now.

From the website:

Now, as UW-Stout Polytechnic, the university requests that members of the media and other outside organizations use University of Wisconsin-Stout Polytechnic or UW-Stout Polytechnic rather than UW-Stout or Stout.

Good luck with that. They'll always be Stout - ain't nobody got time to type or say UW-Stout Polytechnic.

Looks like you just did.

I suppose Wis Poly would be easier.

Like California Polytechnic State University is Cal Poly.

It's officially UW-Stout Polytechnic now.

So, both Stevens Point and Stout abbreviations are UWSP. Throw UW-Superior into the mix and it's a jungle out there.
