Good win today! Obviously coach got conservative in the 3rd/4th quarters, but the offense looked great! Multi dimensional with run and pass game kept Wheaton's defense on their heels for the first half. It's going to be tough for any team to cover Turner, Cockrell and Grant,  let alone Williams/Thomas/Minnear out of the backfield.

It looked like someone else was calling the plays bc Dartt was involved in other aspects of the game...I specifically noticed when the offense actually got plays in quickly in the 2 minute drill!

Defense answered some questions getting pressure and in the QBs face to force bad throws, CBs were physical and broke up passes, LBs covered ground and made solid tackles (Cruz with the int).... all around, looking forward to continued growth!

Grove City handled Cortland today, so hopefully everyone is focused and ready to go next Saturday!

Touche! (Sorry ... Couldn't find that little line that should go above the "e.")

Grove City winning was a small surprise, but the score/margin of victory was, in my opinion. I did not see/follow the game.
Will the Purple Raiders see a different sort of offense from Grover than they did today? Nothing really dominate in the stats.

REALITYCHECK -
If you should still be trolling these boards...
I am (liking to) assume that you are at D3 Lake Forest and Claremont-Mudds-Script gridiron action in Chandler this evening.
Interesting to hear your perspective ... you being an Arizona high school football coach and all ... the impact of this D3 game being brought to AZ ... and where talented AZ high school players may choose to go.
Lake Forest roster is ~50 Arizona high school graduates. What have you seen with that? You could not sell Ada and the Regal Beagle on them ... LOL?

Unless I am mistaken, Adrian offers as many football scholarships as Valpo.

MUC 2008

For what it's worth, young Maloney referred to the "offensive coordinator, Coach Collins" in his post game remarks on a video/reel on the school's Facebook page...

Now that is some exciting news.  Junior was pretty highly thought of prior to getting that coaching internship with the Colts.

Hopefully yesterday was just a case of shutting it down a little early and keeping it off the film with another top15-20 matchup next week

I'm in the midst of watching the Mount game, but glancing at some box scores this morning from other games had a couple thoughts.

I did not have Wilm hanging 59 points and over 500 yds of offense on Wooster.  Very balanced with 267 yds in the air and 247 yds on the ground.  It looks like the Scots were picked to finish ahead of only Oberlin (who lost 88-6 to Calvin) so not a lot of expectations in Wayne County.  That said, I'd say that makes them roughly a peer for the Quakers so IMO that's an impressive effort.

The reason I was looking at the NCAC preseason poll in the first place was because I wanted to see where the coaches had Witt once I saw BW handled them 31-13 on the road.  The Flaming Pile was up 24-0 at half.  They held the Tigers to 224 yds and the only score they gave up before garbage time at the end was a 14 yd drive to make it 24-6.  Witt was picked 5th by the coaches FWIW although someone gave them a 1st place vote.

It's going to be a long year in Westerville I fear.  Ott gave up 65 pts and and 665 yds of offense...to OWU.  Yikes.  Bishops' QB threw 6 TDs.  Just not much positive momentum for the Cards football program.

ONU gave up an 84 yd TD pass on the first play from scrimmage against Franklin.  At one point they were down 27-6, but they battled back and cut it to 27-20.  Bears had the ball 1st and 10 on their own 44 at the 2:00 timeout so they had a shot to tie it.

Not OAC, but something in the JCU box score had me doing a double take.  Semphimphelter was 25-26 for 301 yds and 2 TD against Waynesburg.  That's insane with that many attempts.  I'm curious to see how NCAC play goes for the Streaks.

More likely a 10-15 matchup with GCC smoking Cortland.

and no Mount Union to play, sure looks like the Blue Streaks will be able navigate a brutally tough NCAC schedule.  The NCAA will no doubt ship JCU to Alliance within the first week or two of the postseason

let's hope so.  A top 10 win on the road is not a very common thing even the world of Mount Union.  Grove City, despite their preseason ranking by the experts, was always going to be the better/tougher opponent for Mount in the first couple of weeks

Yeah, I'm not sure that anyone in the NCAC will be able to put up any resistance. The DePauw/JCU game in October will likely be for the Pool A bid unless some crazy things happen.

This was the most surprising result to me. ONU beat Franklin last season, 45-7. While ONU returns a lot of skill guys, it appears that most of their Oline graduated. They only put up 96 yards rushing on Franklin. Last season, they had 290 yards in the game! Will be a tough season if they can't get the running game going.

First and foremost, I am beyond exited about the Maloney era.  He looked really good against a tough defense.  But beyond that I always feel like Mount is much harder to stop when they're adding the complexity to defend motion/fakes/RPO, etc.  Maloney set the tone almost immediately with the 55 yd run.  He looked so natural on the read plays that he had me fooled several times along with the Wheaton D.

Great job by the defense coming out of half.  Start with getting a strong initial series from the D to force Wheaton to punt out of their own end zone and give Mount great field position.  Raiders get a FG out of it.  Grant was a shoestring tackle away from jogging in with a TD.  Follow that up with Cruz picking off Wheaton in their own territory leading to another TD.  The response by the D out of half pushed it to 37-7 which it ended up they needed that cushion.

The WR group looked as expected.  They looked explosive and can really run.  I can't imagine anyone they see in the regular season is going to be able to trot out 3 DBs that can match up with those guys.  It's going to be fun for Maloney.

If the game was only 3 qtrs that would have been a solid 'A' performance.  But the 4th was not pretty.  Defense couldn't get a stop (including a 2 pt conversion after a 5 yd penalty), special teams didn't handle the onside kick, offense (backup) couldn't pick up a 3rd and 1 that Dartt was clearly not pleased with his OL after.  Definitely stuff to work on, but Wheaton's QB is good.  He made plays.  The one TD pass the DB had perfect coverage it was just thrown high where only the WR could get it.

Overall good win.  Gives you stuff to address in practice as I expect Grove City will next week.  I could definitely get used to these better OOC games!

Two comments in your Wheaton comeback notes.... that onside kick was tough and I give the kicker credit. It was a great kick that never took a high bounce for an 'easier' catch.

Also, it looked like they pulled Fortner (Oline) in the 3rd/early 4th due to slight injury. They took his pads, but he was still up and down the sideline (limp) cheering the team on. He'll likely be back from the look of it.
