my stupid reply to all of this is, then why even do ranks? They seem to be completely meaningless...
Which ranks are you referring to?  The top 25 rankings are meaningless as far as the playoffs go.

Always have been. The regional rankings will tell you who get in; our national ranking will tell you who will win once you get there.

Ooo, looks like I'm not even going to look at these first regionals.

Division 1 has 3 of 4 teams from the south. But then, that doesn't matter for team travel and
the big $tadiums, does it?

maybe...I mean--we thought HSU was going to be good for our SOS back in 2012 and 2013 and then they had relatively down years....and Chapman this year...who would have thought they'd be as bad as they have been this year.  Maybe MHB's loss this year is the beginning of a downturn!  ::)

Well - kinda. I don't see St. Scholly or LaVerne & Shirley listed - but they're in. I'd say the RR's tell you how the at large hopefuls stack up and preview which team might host over another team.

D3football.com's notes on the West Regional ranking:

St. Thomas' win vs. the fifth-ranked team apparently judged as better than Linfield's win vs. the other fifth-ranked team. If committee deemed this a tie, then Linfield should be No. 1 based on 'last year's playoff performance' tiebreaker. ... Committee seems to not understand that Finlandia is a D-III opponent as neither UWW nor UWO is given credit for them as a D-III win. ... Platteville and St. John's with head-to-head over Dubuque, who has head-to-head over Wartburg.

After all these years I think I finally got it:

Strength of schedule is the primary focus of the committee in determining the west regional rankings.

Strength of schedule is just one of many factors the committee must  consider in formulating the North regional rankings.

Looks better for Whitworth than I would have guessed. They could easily be behind UW-P and Wartburg with little chance at a Pool C. Still seems slim (behind UW-W and SJU), but better than none...
This is actually quite good for Whitworth--much better than I would have expected.  I'm sure Wally Wabash will have his projections out shortly but if these were the rankings used come selection time I think Whitworth would have more than a slim chance of making the field.
Remember who Whitworth plays their final two games. Whitworths SOS currently 63rd will take a big hit with L&C and Willamette.

don't know what LF sos # is, is it possible it will rise above oshkosh and put is a #2 seed in west prior to playoffs? I would think that would make sure we could  beta round #2 home game.

Not likely...
Right now it's: UWO AT #50,  St. Thomas at #82,  and Linfield at #135.

I am surprised Linfield isn't in a second rank position ahead of UWO!

Just as big: Hardin-Simmons is #40.

Clue:  Don't worry, our SOS will go up after playing...
