I believe DePree was a 1st team (maybe 2nd team) all-american.  Can't argue that.  That year I thought DePree was better than Aultman.  On a side note does anyone know how many 1st or 2nd team all-americans the MIAA has had and who they were?

Since 1998 when d3hoops.com started doing All American teams, here are MIAA selections:

Albion
C Brandon Crawford, 2006 (1st)
F Travis DePree, 2005 (2nd)

Calvin
F Jeremy Veenstra, 2000 (HM), 2001 (4th), 2002 (4th), 2003 (3rd)
F Aaron Winkle, 1999 (3rd), 2000 (1st)

Defiance
F Chad Kahle, 2000 (2nd)

Hope
G Stephen Cramer, 2007 (4th)
G Joel Holstege, 1998 (1st)
C Don Overbeek, 2003 (2nd)
F Jesse Reimink, 2009 (1st)
F Marcus Vanderheide, 2008 (3rd)

Olivet
C Michael McClary, 2010 (HM)

stats fans.... anyone know Hope's single game record for steals?  DeVette record?  I could have sworn Krombeen was pushing 8 or 9 last night but I suppose it was because there were so many, so fast.  The sentinel said that david and ty both had 6? Nice work from your backcourt.

I have my own database of Hope stats that has individual game stats from the 01-02 season to the present.  It shows these 5 performances tied with 7 steals.  I suspect that Joel Holstege (the all time Hope leader in steals) had a game or two above 7.

Matt Talyor       12/19/01   Madonna
Ryan Klein        12/08/07   Aquinas
Jesse Reimink   12/29/07   Mt. Vernon Nazarene
Jesse Reimink   02/02/08   Albion
Peter Bunn       12/19/09   Spring Arbor

Apparently 12/19 is a good day to steal something   ;)

Kinda surprised this hasn't been revisited since the Malone game.  Krombeen was credited with 9 steals that night, and set a new fieldhouse record--one that I would think should stand for a long time.  Nice job, David.

David is currently tied for 10th in D3 with 3.5 steals per game.

http://web1.ncaa.org/stats/StatsSrv/rankings?sportCode=MBB

His game agains Malone was the 4th best so far in D3. Three guys have had a ten steal game.

One last appeal for everyone to join the MIAA Pick Em contest.  Currently we have 23 people participating, but there's always room for more.

I know that Eric Elliott and Wade Gugino were at Hope and Bill Sall and Steve Honderd were at Calvin (Honderd 2nd team unbelievably in '92 and 1st team and national player of the year in '93)

Its been awhile since we've had such an obvious choice for MVP going into a season.  Barring injuries, illness or other weird stuff, Michael McClary has one hand around the plaque and its his to lose.

25.7 pts, 9.2 rebounds, both lead the league while shooting 54.2% FG

We probably have to go back to the Veenstra or Winkle days to find a player so obviously the MVP before the conference play starts.  Albion's Crawford in 2005 was probably in a similar position, but I seem to recall some debate about that one.

This was a simple typo, I certainly meant 06

Off topic, but I know there are people who've posted here with an interest or opinion.

In case anyone is in the dark or on an island......Michigan has a press conference at 12:30 aired by ESPN.   The house has been cleaned.

Is the game tonight going to be broadcast in HD?

http://www.wgvu.org/tv/tv_schedule.cfm

From the TV schedule page:
QuoteHope Calvin Men's Basketball

#2011

Air: Wednesday, January 5, 8:00 pm on HD/Main Schedule

Broadcast In: English

no description

Run Time: 02:30:00

Format: HD   Source: WGVU

... maybe it just means that it'll be broadcast on the HD station (but not necessarily shot in HD). I think that's how it was last year.

Calvin fans correct me if I am wrong, but your 1992 and 1993 had to be a couple of your best teams ever.  Didn't Calvin win the National Championship in '92 then lost to Ohio Northern in the NCAA's in '93.  Ohio Northern went on to the win National Championship in '93.  I believe Albion's Head Coach Jody May played for Ohio Northern in '93.

Big festivities at halftime of Calvin/Hope game tonight.  After Pete Hoekstra is honored for his years of service as a congressman, the Cosmos Color Guard will take to the floor.

It makes no difference whether I saw the shot or not.  :)  The point is to get the ball in your best shooters hands, and presently that is Mr. Brink for either a 2 or a 3 pointer.

FWIW:  Did you forget Mr. Brink is the one who hit a 3 pointer with 9 seconds left to even give Calvin the slim chance it had?

Everything else being equal, I would have been delighted to see Jordan Brink toe the arc, pause, and then take a game tying triple at the end of regulation. Sadly, for those of us who actually watched the game, we noticed that Benedictine didn't give Calvin the option after the missed free throw with six seconds left.

Not that it matters any, but I did watch that game, and even commented on what a great job Bluejay TV did.  My opinion was based on the following shooting percentages:
               3 pt                   2 pt.
Brink       .462                   .553
Schuster .438                   .432
Snikkers .375                   .511
Rodts     .346                   .489
Powell    .302                   .409

The timeout taken at .07 was the 4th Calvin timeout of the second half, if one can believe the play by play.

Although, one might want to use career 3-point percentages regressed toward the team mean.

Really quickly, the chart may look like this:

Player--3P--3PA--PCT--x3PCT
Rodts--77--171--0.450--0.419
Brink--12--26--0.462--0.385
Schuster--37--102--0.363--0.364
Snikkers--18--60--0.300--0.341
Powell--36--123--0.293--0.325

Where x3PCT is the expected 3-point percentage.
Assuming last year's team average (0.365) as a decent population mean.
Assuming 100 attempts as the 50-50 point for regression (no real idea what a good number is).

edited to correct my math

Thanks KS. :)  Rodts should really look to shoot much more than he does, and I certainly want Brink to be more involved.  Hopefully OK will pass this along as Schnyders should really be seeing more playing time as well. ;)

Who is going to have "the magical" game tonight and lead their team to victory? Hope needs Bowser to have a special night, not so much scoring but on the glass.  Needs one of those 16 and 10 games.

What will be the key stat (s)?- Rebounding differential, to's, ft's? Dickerson on Rodts or Schuster? Brink on Krombeen or Tanis? Scheyders composed and under control like this year, or out of control and in foul trouble like past years in big game?

Someone break it down for me.....

Rodts will draw the Bowser assignment. That much is for sure.

Keys for Calvin:
Keep Hope sub .400 on 3-pt shooting.
Commit to rebounding

hoopdreams

-Snikkers on Snugg's?
-7-20, happy with sub 40%?  Guessing Hope would be happy with that but i understand what you're getting at
-Have a feeling FT's made is going to have a huge impact, as will bench contributions ( I know, nothing revolutionary there)
-Can Hope turn them over as they have the last 4 teams, or can calvin limit their turnovers?
- Great call on the glass!!! a +8 or more rebounding margin is key for both teams and could be considered glass domination at this point.  Hope needs their athletic, experienced MIAA MVP hopeful to gather more than the 4 boards he is currently averaging.
- Kooiker doing the game tonight?
